Mitt Romney told The Eagle-Tribune editorial board last week that he thinks the Republican nomination will be locked up by Feb. 6, which is why he has pursued a strategy of winning the early states — Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Michigan. Although a brokered convention is still a possibility, he said it isn’t likely.
Romney leads in the latest Iowa poll, with support from 36.2 percent of the most-likely caucus-goers. Way behind Romney and running almost neck and neck are Rudy Giuliani, with 13.1 percent; Mike Huckabee, with 12.8, and Fred Thompson, with 11.4. Huckabee has been surging since August, the poll shows. Romney won the Iowa straw poll last summer.
