While Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were busy campaigning in Londonderry and Derry this week, Fred Thompson continues to keep a low profile in the Granite State.
He will attend an “intimate” breakfast social to benefit Manchester Mayor Frank Giunta on Friday morning at 7:30 a.m., but he’s not making himself very accessible. The breakfast costs $50 per ticket | quite a contrast to Obama’s free gathering in Mack’s Apples and Clinton’s Town Hall meeting at the Adams Memorial Opera House.
Outside of New Hampshire, Thompson has been getting plenty of free publicity of late. But little of it has been good.
Darrell Hammond spoofed Fred on last weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live.
“I intend to treat my time in the White House like my time on ‘Law and Order,’” Hammond drawled in his best Fred imitation. “I’m in the opening credits, but not all the scenes.”
On Tuesday, Fred took center stage at a GOP debate in Dearborn, Mich., even serving as the butt of one of Mitt Romney’s jokes.
“This is a lot like ‘Law and Order,’” said Romney, in one of the night’s lighter moments. “It has a huge cast, the series seems to go on forever, and Fred Thompson shows up at the end.”
To which Thompson replied, “And to think I thought I was going to be the best actor on the stage.”
Update: Thompson canceled Friday’s trip to New Hampshire on Wednesday afternoon. No explanation was given.
