I love art — and a good show at the MFA. The museum’s current major exhibition, “El Greco to Velazquez” is no exception.
I thought I was familiar with El Greco’s work before I headed to the Boston museum. When I got there I realized I had no clue. While I was familiar with his portraits, I had no idea about his other work — or the depth of his genius.

This just in from my colleague Emily Young:
So before last night, I was a ‘Hairspray’ virgin. I did see television ads for last summer’s silver screen revival (seriously, no one could stop the beat with those hourly TV commercials). And sure, I grew up in the era of Ricki Lake. But somehow I had never seen the movie, the musical, or really even used the styling product. All that changed Friday when I saw the theatrical performance at The Wang Theatre with my husband. Continue Reading »

The brothers of “Mmmbop” fame are headed to the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom this week.
I have to confess, I interviewed them during the early years (the late ’90s). At the time, I remember thinking they were a little precocious. But in talking to Zac Hanson about where the band is today — and all the good they’re doing for the poor in Africa — I was really impressed with how down to earth they seem to be.
For more details, check out my story, here.
And hey — the music from the latest CD wasn’t bad either.

This just in from my colleague, Emily Young:
One of many Young family traditions was an annual pilgrimage to the Big Apple Circus. More often than not, our trip to the Boston big top fell on Patriot’s Day, when the city was crowded with exhausted marathoners and celebratory fans.

In the course of working on today’s (Sunday, April 13) story about the birth of the peace symbol, I had the chance to talk to some locals about the peace movement.
There’s a lot going on locally — including a weekly gathering in Newburyport.
Am I the only one who’s been oblivious? What’s going on here?

This just in:
Raine Maida, best known for his gig fronting iconic Canadian rock band Our Lady Peace, has branched off on his own and created the record he was always meant to make. The Hunter’s Lullaby, set to hit on August 26th (Kingnoise Records) is a collection of 10 commanding songs that are poignant and lyrical, delivered in a style reminiscent of the 60’s beat poets with hip hop influenced beats of today. A courageous album by an artist who is reveling in the freedom of creative and commercial independence.

An interesting tidbit from a press release I received today:
JibJab, the online entertainment studio that shattered viral video records with its political parody “This Land” is now offering users the chance to put themselves and their friends into hip-hop megastar Snoop Dogg’s latest video, “Sensual Seduction”.
With JibJab’s ‘Starring You!™’ technology, users can upload their photos, cut out their heads and cast themselves and friends in the Snoop Dogg video. The incredibly fun, unique experience can be found at www.JibJab.com.
“Our audience has made over 10 million ‘Starring You!’ movies since we launched last year,” said JibJab co-founder Grevan Spiridellis. “Working with an incredible talent like Snoop Dogg brings the experience to a whole new level.”
JibJab worked closely with Interscope Geffen A&M Records to bring this unique offering to Snoop Dogg and JibJab fans alike.
“At Interscope Geffen A&M, we are constantly exploring innovative new ways to connect our artists with their fans,” said Ted Mico. “JibJab’s ‘Starring You!’ tied in perfectly with the numerous digital initiatives we have underway here at Interscope Geffen A&M.”
The Snoop Dogg ‘Starring You!’ video is free to make at JibJab.com with a $3 service charge to store, share and post the video to blogs and social networks.
I am already contemplating who should make their rap video debut . . .

I have a friend who calls cooking shows “food porn” and I have to say — she’s totally right.
I’ve watched people make amazing dishes on these TV shows. I think the point is to get you to make it yourself at home.
I think I’ll stick to toast — and perhaps my specialty — burnt scrambled eggs.
I used to think I was alone in my lack of culinary skill –then I saw professional chefs make Gordon Ramsey hurl on Hell’s Kitchen recently.
I mean really, even I know white chocolate, caviar and scallops can’t be good.
If I had to pick a favorite chef, I think it would have to be Tom Colicchio. He looks like a man who can cook, as well as eat.
What do you think?
