Broadway’s #1 Holiday hit comes to the Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theatre
November 26 - December 28, 2008

(Boston, MA June 11, 2008) - Running Subway Productions along with 3-time Tony Award® winning director, Jack O’Brien will bring the critically acclaimed, record-breaking Broadway production Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical to the Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theatre during the 2008 holiday season. The classic, whimsical tale will enchant audiences for 66 performances in Boston, Wednesday, November 26 through Sunday, December 28.

The Grinch has broken box office attendance records for two consecutive years on Broadway during its limited holiday engagements at the St. James (2007) and Hilton (2006) theatres in New York. Thousands of families have been delighted by this heart-warming musical, which The New York Times praises as “100 times better than any bedside story.”

Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical features the hit songs “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch” and “Welcome Christmas” from the original animated series. Max the Dog narrates as the mean and scheming Grinch, whose heart is “two sizes too small,” decides to steal Christmas away from holiday loving Whos. Magnificent sets and costumes inspired by Dr. Seuss’ original illustrations help transport audiences to the whimsical world of Whoville, while the Music and Book of Mel Marvin and Timothy Mason breathe new life into this timeless story of the true meaning of Christmas.

The Grinch plays at the Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theatre Wednesday, November 26 through Sunday, December 28; a complete performance schedule is available at www.citicenter.org. Tickets range from $78.00 - $28.00 with Premium tickets also available. All ticket prices include a $3.00 facility/education-public programming fee per ticket. Groups may reserve tickets now by contacting Citi Performing Arts Center Group Sales at (617) 532-1116 or groupsales@citicenter.org. The Grinch is an exclusive attraction of The Club at Citi Performing Arts Center. Club members can purchase tickets by calling (877) 232-8898, online at www.citicenter.org/club or in person at the Box Office Monday - Saturday, 10 AM - 6PM.

If you’ve been waiting with baited breath about what shows are coming to Boston this year from Broadway, well, here’s the scoop (the stuff in quotes is my take):

A CHORUS LINE – Longest-running American Broadway musical ever!
September 11 – October 5, 2008
The Opera House
In an empty theatre, on a bare stage, casting for a new Broadway musical is almost complete. For 17 dancers, this audition is the chance of a lifetime. It’s what they’ve worked for - with every drop of sweat, every hour of training, every day of their lives. It’s the one opportunity to do what they’ve always dreamed— to have the chance to dance. This is A CHORUS LINE, the musical for everyone who’s ever had a dream and put it all on the line. Winner of nine Tony Awards®, including “Best Musical” and the Pulitzer Prize for drama, this singular sensation is the longest-running American Broadway musical ever. Now A CHORUS LINE returns. Come meet the new generation of Broadway’s best. “A CHORUS LINE is back, and it’s thrilling!” - John Lahr, The New Yorker.

I think the was the second Broadway musical I ever saw. I loved it instantly, though it’s weird experience seeing it at 13 with your parents.

So before last night, I was a ‘Hairspray’ virgin. I did see television ads for last summer’s silver screen revival (seriously, no one could stop the beat with those hourly TV commercials). And sure, I grew up in the era of Ricki Lake. But somehow I had never seen the movie, the musical, or really even used the styling product. All that changed Friday when I saw the theatrical performance at The Wang Theatre with my husband. (more…)

Got a great review today from colleague Emily Young about the latest show to hit the Hub, “Whistle Down the Wind.” Enjoy.

For $25, why not?
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s latest musical, “Whistle Down the Wind,” is having a fire sale. All tickets at the Citi Performing Arts Center (better known by many as the Wang Theatre) are just $25 — with an even deeper discount for groups of 15 or more.
It’s easy to see why the show is struggling to recoup traditional ticket prices. The plot — set in a small Louisiana town 1959 — is completely far-fetched and many subplots are never developed. But the score, a mix of rock ‘n’ roll, blues, gospel and country, was thoroughly hummable and the singing strong. The Boston theater itself is quite lovely and this might be your only chance to see the orchestra pit for less than $75.
“Whistle Down the Wind” runs through Sunday at Citi Performing Arts Center, 270 Tremont St., Boston. Tickets are $25 at the box office, www.citicenter.org, or by calling 800-447-7400. Discounted tickets are available for groups of 15 or more by calling 617-532-1116.

Praise good theater and warn other of the mistakes out there — send me your reviews of currently playing shows in the area at rford@eagletribune.com.
