This just in:
Raine Maida, best known for his gig fronting iconic Canadian rock band Our Lady Peace, has branched off on his own and created the record he was always meant to make. The Hunter’s Lullaby, set to hit on August 26th (Kingnoise Records) is a collection of 10 commanding songs that are poignant and lyrical, delivered in a style reminiscent of the 60’s beat poets with hip hop influenced beats of today. A courageous album by an artist who is reveling in the freedom of creative and commercial independence.

Just got this interesting information and thought I’d share:
Marc Rizzo is one of the new breed of young guitarists in contemporary bands and has built a substantial following through his years of touring and recording with IL Nino, Soulfly and now breaking Metal History with shredding for Metal Icons Max & Iggor Cavalera in Cavalera Conspiracy.

Rizzo has stepped out with solo projects that reveal a phenomenal command of the guitar. Both solo albums unveils Rizzo to be a master musician with deep musical roots in metal, classical and flamenco guitar

His own beat

Lawrencian Jose Arias recently lent his talents to BET’s new show “Iron Ring.”
Arias scored the music for the series, which premieres Tuesday, March 18, at 11 p.m.
The show is a mixed martial arts competition featuring celebrity team owners, like Nelly and Ludacris.
This is what Ludacris has to say in the press release:
“What people will get out of IRON RING is that it’s less about the man in the fight and more about the fight in … continued »

Elton

This just in from my colleague Emily, who recently saw the Rocket Man in Manchester, N.H.:
Last night, Elton John was a man on a mission to give his fans their money’s worth. He systematically knocked off hit after hit, playing — by my count — 25 songs and two encores. The two and a half hour, marathon show feature little chitchatting and surprisingly little flare from a man who is … continued »

Ani Difranco review

Just got this review from Pop reader Jaden. Sounds like a great concert (sorry I missed it).  Here’s what Jaden had to say:
I am a critic when it comes to concerts.
I’ve spent many a buck and many a day traveling to the Tweeter center, or to Meadowbrook, only to be disappointed by bad sound techs, bad seating, bad entertainer attitudes or bad weather. There’s always something that happens to ruin the possibility of having a wonderful time. Needless to say, I was beginning to wonder if there was such a thing as a fully satisfying performance.
I certainly didn’t expect it to happen at a small venue, with an indie artist, at the concert that had been rescheduled from the previous month because she had laryngitis. Even though Ani Difranco is my favorite singer of all-time, I still went into her concert at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord last Thursday fully thinking I could leave disappointed. continued »

Magnetic Fields
Touring for the first time since 2004, The Magnetic Fields played the Somerville Theatre Thursday night to promote their newly released album, Distortion, on Nonesuch Records. With lyrics like “Let this be the epitaph for my heart. Cupid put too much poison in the dart,” it made for a wonderfully sarcastic Valentine’s Day show. The set list was filled with songs … continued »

Zombie coming home?

Check out tomorrow’s paper (Tuesday, Feb. 12) for my story about a Haverhill teen trying to bring rocker/director Rob Zombie back to his alma mater as a graduation speaker.

What do you think? Would Rob Zombie be a good graduation speaker?

Let me know.

Concert review of Mika

Got this review from a reader, Victoria:
With his edgy upbeat lyrics, wide vocal range, and charisma, British pop star Mika is a gem. He isn’t only a great singer but a true performer, who truly connects with the audience.
Mika was incredibly likable. Half way through the concert, he began a song and made a mistake with the lyrics. He stopped, laughed, said ‘Sometimes you mess up so bad you have to just start again’ — … continued »

The Grammy Awards

My editor Tracey said:
What did you think of the Foo Fighters with a full string orchestra? Neat, I think, but not exactly soothing.
Unfortunately, I missed this. I was flipping back and forth — the Grammys couldn’t hold my attention. I did catch Amy Winehouse — loved the music, little weirded out by the performance.
