The best American Idol ever

I thought last night’s show was the best “American Idol” ever, possibly the best concert ever.

I mean, pairing David Cook and ZZ Top? Totally brilliant.

Almost every moment of the show worked, from the performances of the Top 12 with stars like Donna Summer and (OMG!) Bryan Adams to the video presentations | from the wisdom of the Guru Pitka to Galdys Knight and her unexpected Pips.

To cap it all off, Cook wins. I was positive Archuleta was going to take the title, but Cook was a great choice. Can’t wait to see the concert.

Coffeehouse fodder

This just in from Kathy Sands-Boehmer:

One of the musicians that I represent (Joey Mutis aka The Electric Farm) is playing at the me&thee THIS Friday. This is his first gig ever in Massachusetts and he and his bass player are driving all the way here from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He will be opening up for Kasim Sulton (Todd Rundgren / Meatloaf’s bass player extraordinaire at Johnny D’s on May 27 but this slot at the me&thee will give you a real good taste of who he is and why I love his music so much).

As though seeing Joey isn’t enough, I have also booked John Elliott who is one of the most innovative and creative new singer-songwriters that I have heard in YEARS. He sent me his CD a year ago and I put it and could barely wait to get out of the car and race to my computer and write him a thank you letter FAN letter. He’s that good. His music has been on the hit TV show, “Grey’s Anatomy” and he deserves a larger audience so I’m doing my part so please consider doing him a favor and being part of the audience on Friday.

Also on the bill, the Goodhues Band from right here on the North Shore and a lovely and inspiring songwriter, Eve Goldberg from Toronto!

Hanson is coming to town

The brothers of “Mmmbop” fame are headed to the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom this week.

I have to confess, I interviewed them during the early years (the late ’90s). At the time, I remember thinking they were a little precocious. But in talking to Zac Hanson about where the band is today — and all the good they’re doing for the poor in Africa — I was really impressed with how down to earth they seem to be.

Canadian rocker goes solo . . .

This just in:

Raine Maida, best known for his gig fronting iconic Canadian rock band Our Lady Peace, has branched off on his own and created the record he was always meant to make. The Hunter’s Lullaby, set to hit on August 26th (Kingnoise Records) is a collection of 10 commanding songs that are poignant and lyrical, delivered in a style reminiscent of the 60’s beat poets with hip hop influenced beats of today. A courageous album by an artist who is reveling in the freedom of creative and commercial independence.

Interesting concert: Marc Rizzo of Cavalera Conspiracy & Soulfly on tour

Just got this interesting information and thought I’d share:

Marc Rizzo is one of the new breed of young guitarists in contemporary bands and has built a substantial following through his years of touring and recording with IL Nino, Soulfly and now breaking Metal History with shredding for Metal Icons Max & Iggor Cavalera in Cavalera Conspiracy.

Rizzo has stepped out with solo projects that reveal a phenomenal command of the guitar. Both solo albums unveils Rizzo to be a master musician with deep musical roots in metal, classical and flamenco guitar
