For the seventh year running, thousands of half-price tickets to many of the Boston-area’s best loved holiday shows go on sale today, Monday, November 1, 2010 at MayorsHolidaySpecial.com. A record 15,000 half-price seats are available online for 100 shows – twice as many as last year – even including Radio City Christmas Spectacular starring the Rockettes, Boston Ballet’s The Nutcracker, Boston Holiday Pops and Disney on Ice: Princess Wishes.
MayorsHolidaySpecial.com is the City of Boston’s central website for holiday arts and fun: the most comprehensive destination for making holiday entertainment plans and saving money, with ½-price tickets to all the area’s most popular shows plus listings of free and low-cost holiday activities. This unique partnership between the Mayor’s Office of Arts, Tourism and Special Events, the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau and ArtsBoston has enabled hundreds of thousands of families and friends to enjoy holiday attractions at a great price since its inception in 2003.
New this year, the site also offers a $10-off coupon for local restaurants and holiday businesses.
With the arts deals powered by local non-profit ArtsBoston, MayorsHolidaySpecial.com reinvests every dollar patrons spend on theatre, dance and music tickets back into Boston’s arts community, helping to sustain and grow local cultural programming.
“I invite residents and visitors to enjoy Boston’s sparkling holiday arts scene and beloved holiday traditions,” said Mayor Thomas Menino. “See a show, stroll through the holiday lights, and savor a great Boston experience that you’ll treasure forever.”
Mayor’s Holiday Special showcases arts and cultural programming within Greater Boston, a sector brimming with optimism this year even during hard economic times:
- Expanded theatre district with the openings of the restored Modern Theater and Paramount Theatre;
- Museum expansion and art openings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Harvard art museums and others;
- 100 top-notch productions, twice as many as last year, including holiday blockbusters; much-loved traditions such as Boston Baroque’s Messiah and the concerts of the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus; and fantastic shows all over the region, from Merrimack Repertory Theatre (Lowell) to Lexington Symphony, Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts (Worcester), and the newly renovated North Shore Music Theatre.“From our expansive free holiday event listings to ½ price tickets to the $10-off coupon, we are bringing extra holiday cheer to Boston this season. MayorsHolidaySpecial.com simplifies your discovery of it all,” said Catherine Peterson, ArtsBoston Executive Director.
“Inspired by the popularity of Restaurant Week, we are pleased to suggest dinner and a show — a full evening — with the brand-new $10 Mayor’s Holiday Special Voucher,” said Pat Moscaritolo, GBCVB President & CEO. The voucher is valid at participating restaurants when you spend $40 or more.
Half-price ticket quantities are limited for each performance, and allotments change daily, so the public is encouraged to visit early and often, and even to sign up for email updates. The site includes a list of restaurants and businesses participating in the $10 Special Voucher program, and the details of voucher use. The two-month program runs through January 1, 2011.
Participation remains open: Arts groups interested in joining MayorsHolidaySpecial.com should contact info@artsboston.org. Restaurants and holiday businesses should contact MHS@BostonUSA.com.
