For the rock group Sublime their musical careers came to an abrupt stop with the death of lead singer, Bradley Nowell in 1996, just two months before the release of the band’s self-titled album “Sublime”.
Now, the band “Bad Fish — A Tribute to Sublime”, will bring Sublime fans a live version of music they would otherwise, never hear live.
According to drummer Scott Begin, the band started in 2001 at the University of Rhode Island.
“We thought why not start a Sublime Tribute cover band, there were no other bands like that and it would be fun,” Begin said.
Along with Begin, bassist, Joel Hanks, and guitaris and singer, Pat Downes, and Ben Schomp, on horns, keys and guitar, will be playing at the House of Blues in Boston, this Saturday, April 24.
Touring may be hard work but last year the band played 150 shows, all over the country and according to Begin life on the road has its ups and downs.
“Life on tour interesting to say the least,” said Begin. “We have to move around a lot and on our days off we have things to do like laundry. You don’t see much besides the inside of the bus.”
Despite the hectic schedule that the band keeps they love their work andBegin believes “it’s a balance that we have to keep.”
“We have to play what people want to hear,” said Begin. “We see eye to eye on how we go about doing the shows and our fans are receptive everywhere.”
And fans the fans are all ages from from high school kids to parents.
“I’m amazed I dont get bored playing the same stuff over and over again,” said Begin. “I don’t understand why, but there is a demand for this (kind of music).It snowballed and now we’re a full time band.”
Begin said that the band plays over two hours of music which is over 100 minutes of Sublime.
“Our aim is put on a high energy and entertaining show,” said Begin. “ We play songs the way people are used to hearing them, but we adjust them to make them work in a live setting.”
