For Adrienne Martini, and countless other knitters, knitting is the linchpin of sanity. As a working mother of two, Martini wanted a challenge that would make her feel in charge.

So she decided to make the Holy Grail of sweaters—her own “Mary Tudor,” whose mind-numbingly gorgeous pattern is so complicated to knit that its mere mention can hush a roomful of experienced knitters.

In SWEATER QUEST: My Year of Knitting Dangerously (Free Press Trade Paperback Original; March 23, 2010; $15.00), Martini writes a woolly Julie and Julia, recounting her mission to knit the piece de resistance of sweaters—in one year— while illuminating larger issues of perseverance and purpose, relationships and obsession.

She will be signing copies at Porter Square Books on April 15 at 7 p.m.

Free Press is hosting a SWEATER QUEST sweepstakes until 4/30/2010. The grand prize winner gets a book and a $250 gift certificate to their favorite knitting store. The three finalists get $100 gift certificates and a book, and 20 people will receive a book.
