The Feast of the Three Saints in Lawrence, Mass., is back this Labor Day weekend, celebrating the incredible lives of brothers Alfio, Filadelfo and Cirino.
The three were martyred for their faith more than 1,700 years ago in Sicily, and now the descendants of Sicilian immigrants (and other Italians too) commemorate them with an annual extravaganza.
Here is a preliminary entertainment schedule:
Friday, Sept. 4
8 p.m.: Lawrence’s Campagnone Common.
Stephen Savio sings the National Anthem.
Carissa Scudieri opens annual free concert.
(9 p.m.) Singing sensation, Italian-American tenor, Aaron Caruso performs. Caruso stars in the new Broadway show ” Be My Love,” based on the life of Mario Lanza, opening in October. Caruso will play Lanza in the show, and will sing the legend’s songs at this show.
Saturday, Sept. 5
5 p.m. Feast favorite, Next Food Network Star contender Tommy Grella Jr. does a cooking demonstration in the Italian tent area near Holy Rosary. Come early.
5.45 p.m. Nikki DelliColli’s DC2 Dance Troupe performs. Come cheer the children on as they dance the Tarantella and many more traditional dances at the bandstand (corner of Common and Union streets).
6:15 p.m.: Travel down memory lane with Frances Puglisi as she sings wonderful renditions of Italian favorites in the Italian tent area.
8.30 p.m.: The Silvertones play today’s popular sounds, at the Tripoli Stage.
9 p.m.: The “Charlie Thomas” Drifters, famous for songs like “Under The Boardwalk,” “Save the Last Dance For Me,” “Sweets For My Sweet” at the bandstand.
Sunday, Sept. 6
3:30 p.m.: Mark Johnson Trio in front of the Society.
4:30 p.m.: Regina Rosa Servizio sings Italian standards in the Italian tent area.
8 p.m.: 2009 Winner of the North America Country Music Association International Horizon Award for young singers, Joey Grieve, sings the National Anthem, followed by the B-Street Bombers at the bandstand.
