This sounds fantastic — read on.
(BOSTON) –Filled with comedy and pathos, Anna and her brother Carl
embark on a whirlwind fantasy-adventure through Europe as they seek
out a cure for Anna’s terminal illness, ATD (Acquired Toilet Disease),
written by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Paula Vogel and directed
by Krista D’Agostino. The show runs from October 10 to October 18 at
The Factory Theatre, 791 Tremont St., Boston.
THE PLAY
Paula Vogel (”How I Learned to Drive”) penned “The Baltimore Waltz” as
a eulogy to her brother, who passed away from AIDS in 1988, and
depicts a fictionalized journey to Europe that she and her brother
were never able to take in life. Vogel is often known for her biting
sarcasm, humorous wit and touching moments, and “The Baltimore Waltz”
is no exception as it cleverly satirizes the government’s response to
the AIDS epidemic. The play opened to rave reviews on January 29, 1992
at the Circle Repertory Theatre, directed by Anne Bogart and starring
Cherry Jones. Both artists and Vogel received Obie Awards for their
work on the piece, and it has since become one of the most popular
plays in contemporary drama.
THE PLOT
Told through a series of vignettes, “The Baltimore Waltz” follows the
story of first grade teacher Anna and her brother Carl at they travel
through Europe attempting to find a mysterious doctor who can cure
Anna’s newly diagnosed terminal illness ATD (Acquired Toilet Disease).
As Anna struggles to fill her final moments on earth, she seeks
comfort through history, culture, sex and finally her relationship
with her brother. The result is a humorous and heartbreaking comedy
that explores what it means to cope with grief and celebrate life.
