Van Halen comes to Manchester, N.H., tonight
May 28th, 2008 by Rosemary
What will happen? It’s anyone’s guess. My colleague Paul will be there, covering it for Pop.
He’ll be posting his thoughts here tonight after the show, and perhaps some pictures later on.

I have never seen a Van Halen concert with David Lee Roth, or Sammy Hagar, for that matter, so my opinion on this concert at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester N.H. may be moot.
However, I thought David Lee Roth was horrible.
Roth was lucky he could sing in tune never mind hit the high notes we are accustomed too.
Roth had this plastered-on smile that, to me, looked liked he had one too many Botox injections.
It almost looked like he was faking having a good time. It seemed like he was trying too hard.
Maybe that is just Roth being Roth?
OK, I am being really hard on Roth, but he should have stuck with radio. Anybody got Sammy’s phone number?
If it where not for the rest of the band I might have not made it through the rest of the night.
Eddie, as I expected, was on fire. His son, Wolfgang, was (not being a person pays much attention to bass guitar) good.
As far as Alex is concerned, I give him a him an “A.” I really liked his solo.
If you think I am crazy — and I might be — let me know. Please give me your opinions on the show.
Also, I heard a rumor from a reliable source that this might be Van Halen’s last stop and they might cancel the rest of their tour.
Maybe Roth is getting to them again? -

I’m with you 100%. I brought my 12 year old and all I could do was apologize to him. Roth couldn’t get the crowd worked up because we couldn’t understand what he was saying. I had no idea what song they were playing until they got to the chorus - or Eddie started a familiar tune.
As I said to my son leaving the show…I waited all these years for the reunion tour and if I had known what I was in for I would have perferred an unknown imitation singing for Roth instead of the real thing. At least some young unknown could have done the jumps and kicks to get the crowd pumped.
The most energetic thing Roth did was swing the mic stand.
At some points during the show all he could do was point at Eddie’s guitar and look excited.
I think some of it is the venue. To give VH a break this is the second show I’ve walked out of there. I think they need to do some serious work on the sound in that place.

Hi Debby,
Thanks for the comment. At least I know that I was not the only one that felt that way. I have to say that I was really jazzed-up to see them. I grew up listening to them and was looking for more than what I got. Oh well.
