I hear creator Chris Carter is trying to make a movie that works for people who've never seen the series as well as the die hard fans. Usually when movie makers say this, something very mediocre results. I also think in this day and age it's kind of unnecessary. X-Files plays all over cable in reruns and as you aptly pointed out, there are always the DVDs. I think people who are interested enough will do their homework and those that aren't probably wouldn't see it (or would see it and not care anyway). I’ll be honest, my expectations are pretty low.
