Concert review: Magnetic Fields
Feb 16th, 2008 by Rosemary
This just in, from my colleague Angie Beaulieu
Touring for the first time since 2004, The Magnetic Fields played the Somerville Theatre Thursday night to promote their newly released album, Distortion, on Nonesuch Records. With lyrics like “Let this be the epitaph for my heart. Cupid put too much poison in the dart,” it made for a wonderfully sarcastic Valentine’s Day show. The set list was filled with songs from the new album as well as an appropriate array of songs from their most well-known collection of albums, “69 Love Songs.” Ending with a standing ovation from the crowd, the sold-out concert affirmed that the band’s cult following continues to be smitten.

I love the idea of sarcastic Valentine’s Day lyrics - thanks for sharing! Next up for the section should be a feature on the best tongue-in-cheek bands/songs from the area. “Harry and the Potters” is the first that comes to mind.

I absolutely LOVE the Magnetic Fields. They’re one of my favorite bands. I’ve never seen them live — and I’m not likely to get out much in the near future — but it’s nice to hear they have a sense of humor and they put on a good show. And I had no idea Angie was a fan. Cool. I love your blog, Rose! I just added it to my daily Web reading list. Keep it up!
