The end is near, people. Read on:

The Grammys are saved!

The WGA granted the awards show a waiver today, meaning

Presenters will be funny
No picket lines and no boycotting

Yea!

Maybe I’m optimistic, but I hope this means the strike is close to being over. Soon I may be forced to watch “American Gladiator.”

Miley Mania

I just don’t get it.

Miley Cyrus is talented. She’s cute. If I was a little girl, I might even like the “Hannah Montana” TV show.

But such love? Such obsession? Where does it come from? And why?

There are other talented performers. There are other trendsetters. Why Miley? Why Hannah?
Every generation has its idols — but when was the last time one commanded thousands of dollars for concert tickets? Or sold out thousands of movie theaters in … continued »

CBS just ordered episodes of a Canadian cop drama called “Flashpoint,” which starts shooting in Toronto in April.

For the fall. A new show.

So, the scribes for this show aren’t part of the WGA? Because they’re Canadian? Are they scabs? Is this even legal?

I don’t know what’s going on here, but if the networks can start making shows in Canada, I feel like this strike will never end. This seems really fishy.

While I’m happy they’ll be … continued »

Well, that was a short ceremony. It was great to see so many talented people get recognized.
There were few surprises in the show — it would have been a repeat of the Golden Globes, if they’d been held.
Javier Bardem picked up an Actor for his work in “No Country For Old Men” and Daniel Day Lewis also won for his “There Will Be Blood” role.
(Lewis dedicated his award to Heath Ledger, who he called an … continued »

Well, the red carpet arrivals at the Screen Actor’s Guild have come and gone. I watched them on E! and I have to say, the interviews were pretty dry and very repetitive.
Enough with the “You have a great body, how do you do it?” versus “How do you manage not to appear drunk and drooling on every tabloid cover?”
I mean really, how many interesting answers can people have to these questions? Who’s going to come … continued »

Here she is . . .

Miss Michigan, Kirsten Haglund, was crowned Miss America in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

According to the Associated Press, the 19-year-old aspiring Broadway star sang “Over the Rainbow” to clinch the title at the 87-year-old pageant.

She beat Miss Indiana, Nicole Elizabeth Rash, the first runner up, and Miss Washington, Elyse Umemoto, the second runner up for the $50,000 scholarship and year of travel that comes with the crown.

This year the pageant has undergone some image reshaping … continued »

Several stations are planning “counter programming” during the big game.
Today TNT announced it would show a “marathon” of its hit series “The Closer” starring Kyra Sedgwick, showing nine episodes of the series starting at noon.
This is one of the smartest cop “dramedys” on television. Sedgwick gives a nice edge to her Brenda Lee Johnson, a brilliant southern sleuth hooked on candy.
Sister station, TBS, will show a series of chick flicks, starting at 9:30 a.m. with … continued »

I can’t wait to see this

Morgan Spurlock, the documentarian who risked his life to show the dangers of fast food in “Super Size Me,” recently premiered his latest film at Sundance — “Where in the World is Osama bin Laden?”
Film reviews so far are mixed. Apparently Spurlock traveled the world looking for the terrorist, and then gave up when he got to the really dangerous areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
This is completely understandable — I don’t think anyone should risk … continued »
