OK, some late night fodder for your early morning digestion on Central’s 61-51 win over Andover in boys hoop Friday night.
Not sure where I can start on this, so maybe I will try the front door, which greeted me with a sign that read, “Central vs. Andover Basketball”
$8.
As in eight bucks a head.
Yikes, the power of the press feels pretty good when the alternative is an eight-spot. Good thing Ollie sat this one out.
Hmmm. Eight bucks for a regular season hoop game, and I’m told the gym was cleared out after the freshmen game.
Hmmm. How expensive are lawyers anyways?
The place was mobbed, A+ to both crowds, who seemed under control.
Again, I stood in the opposite corner, away from the student sections, to cover the game, since there were no seats for me.
Not complaining either, I got there right at 7:30, tipoff time. No seat was expected. However, for the folks who paid eight beans and stood in a corner with me?
That’s a different question.
All right, now to the floor.
Very interesting tactics, tonight. Obviously, Andover’s David Fazio was watching over at the Christmas tournament. The coach saw:
1. What Tyler Nelson can do to a basketball game when he takes it over.
2. What happens when the Raiders run into a tough zone.
So he went what Raider coach Rick Nault called “about 60 percent box and 1 on Nelson.”
And the tactic worked for one half. For that half, the first, Central played what I like to call “dump and chase” hoop – which was a lot of threes and tough shots and attacking the offensive glass.
Central needed a spark and found 2.
First, there was the incredibly amped up defensive effort in the third quarter. In six minutes, Andover had three “shots,” no points.
Nault said, “We caused turnovers on seven straight trips.”
That got the Raiders running, injecting Joel Berroa into the offense.
And when the Raiders were forced into the halfcourt, it was junior Lucas Hammel wreaking havoc by busting into the lane and breaking the Warriors down. Suddenly, Raiders popped open everywhere, starting with Doug Gemmell who made a handful of big shots in a 22-point monster night.
So much for the box and 1, and every other defense Andover could throw at Central, which remains on its seemingly endless conference roll.
Interesting to see the pieces fitting in for Andover. Four of the five are back with the big freshmen finishing up his details with the miaa and returning next week.
What does this make the Warriors?
If I had to say it looks like a familiar situation with them and Lawrence battling to be a solid No. 2 behind the Raiders.
Andover’s just missing that one element, which is that trusted and reliable point guard.
Fazio has had to use both his stars, Sam Dowden and James Costello, to bring the ball up the floor. Clearly, this takes its toll on these guys and limits their offense.
Great event, great atmosphere, and a pretty solid job by the two guys in stripes. Yeah, the teams shot 50 free throws, but it seemed like the game had flow, and that’s what mattered most.

$8 a head is pretty steep for HS basketball.  Was this a special price for the CC game or has that been the AHS ticket price all year?  Heard more than one Andover parent complain about the price as well. Next thing you know they will charge to park too.  Great win for the boys (esp w/out LP)-I thought Andover had a chance but even I was underestimating this CC team. Shame on me.  Lucas has really come on as of late…I like him…solid and steady and the bball IQ to make the right plays. Dougie G just making it rain in the Dunn last night.  Also some solid halftime adjustments made by the Yoda of the hardwood(RN).  Glad to see JB be a more aggressive-I think this kid could impose his will on the MVC-keep it up JB no one in this league can stop you-just keep attacking.  Supposed to be a rebuilding year for CC? HA! We dont rebuild- we reload!

To paraphrase Faz on his four years worth of defense on Carson: “We pushed him, pulled him, kicked him, and bit him…”  Hey Tyler, welcome to the Andover approach to defending a particular player.

Is it just me, or is Nick Cambio getting the Jonathan Cruz treatment from officials?  The kid picked up three fouls in thirty seconds, largely because he was the big kid in the same zip code as borderline contact.  He has good feet and impressive finesse.  Let him play.

Took in the Andover-Central game on Friday.  If your life is so boring that you are reading this here are my observations:
    1.  I have to applaud Andover for charging 8 dollars to get in.  Now when we have to pay the ridiculous prices that the MIAA charges at the end of the year we won’t be so pissed.
    2.  Every time I see the Andover AD I realize how much I miss Jim Hurley as the man in charge of Andover athletics.
    3.  Very impressed with the play of Lucas Hammel, love the d and he has some great passes.
    4.  Raider4life really has serious mancrush on Coach Nault. He believes that Nault has invented running water, electricity, and the microwave. Please try to post once without drooling all over the guy.
    5.  Watched your tape Hector, your really getting gray.
    6.  Andover also charged 8 dollars for students to get in.  You really have to tip your hat to them.  The last time I paid 8 dollars for a regular season game it was to watch Cowens at the Garden.
    7.  On a different topic, I have to praise the Haverhill Girls Basketball team.  They have managed to defeat towns from New Hampshire this season that the republican candiates couldn’t even find on their campaign trail.
    8.  I’m still not sure how Central will fare when it steps outside the friendly confines of the Valley.
    9.  Good win for Methuen over Billerica the other night.

Interesting to read is this morning’s Trib, that Fazio, is “the head coach and athletic director” for Andover…
Proof read boys…or fact check…1 or the other…come on guys, really???!!!
8 bucks…I would guess Berg was behind this. I hope CC students read this blog, and use some of the material in creative chants. They have to. Between the hazing, and now the $8…there must be some good material there somewhere.
Very interesting to read this morning that the hazing was common, and had gone on for years. YEARS! AS IN PLURAL…AS IN FAZIO’S KID WAS THERE ONLY 2 SHORT YEARS AGO…AS IN, HOW COULD DAVE POSSIBLY NOT KNOW????!!!!!!!  Sorry, just no way I’m buying that..not any more. I had Dave in the victims column, but the 180 is now complete. My best guess is he knew the poop was heading for than fan, and he tried to get ahead of it.
The principal’s report shows that hazing was on going and common, and that led to them re-instating the head coach. Could someone do that math for me.
Anyway…I’m curious if anyone else, while enjoying this CC season, is already thinking toward next, as I am.
Hamel Joel TN Doug Cambio Barry et al…all back, some of them bigger, tougher, and more experienced. Holy Christ…
As for the poster writing about Cambio getting called on everything…you are SO RIGHT. 3 quickies in the Christmas Tourney, a couple cheapies against Billerica, and  then the AHS game. I think this kid is going to be very good.
Giants minuus the points today. And take  with Broncos…they are going to find a way to New England next week.

We’ll know more about Point 8 in the next few weeks, but here’s a prediction: By 12 over Cathedral, by 8 over SJP, and by 15 over Hendricken.  Extending the logic of Point 1, however, Andover should have charged $15.  Then we wouldn’t feel quite so raped by the MIAA in the tourney.  $8?  With a straight face?  Patently absurd.

And it only gets more disgusting at Andover.  But don’t forget,  the filth outlined in this morning’s paper only came out via the lawsuit, and not from AHS itself as they continue to offer the courageous “no comment”.  Kudos to the ET and Jill Harmacinski for not allowing this to remain under the rug.  Good that Berg took immediate and decisive action against the Andover students who were screaming in TN’s ear on the sideline.  Hell, at one point he almost took his hands out of his pockets.  I’m with the fan, let the creative chants begin.

A thought on the price of admission.  Do AHS and CCHS split the gate evenly?  I ask because I know that AHS and NAHS will jack the price for their football game and split the gate…this is also common among schools for Thanksgiving games.  When AHS and NA play their annual boy/girl double header the cost is about $7 and they split the gate.

Perhaps the greatest blog entry ever on The Creature … except the part of me going really gray.

Hey David Bowie, take a look at the numbers- the guys record speaks for itself.  You can talk all you want about talent and surely CC has it almost every year but that doesn’t equate to wins for everyone.  RN has his kids playing harder, more composed and within themselves like no other coach around these parts. He challenges his players and they respond-can’t say that for most other coaches.  Although my boy Sips at Whittier is doing a great job too (another CCHS guy-go figuer).  Thanks for chiming in though.

the andover high floor is a light colored natural oak or maple=
the out of bounds lines and the mid court line are very close to’the same color a yelowish soft cream = form the seats unless you are right on the line its not visable = i thought they had to be contrasting from the floor color and any surrounding floor areas ==also i think they may have broken
a few fire laws the way they had people blocking doors and sitting in the aisles of the bleachers

First nault4life, it is jbowie not david.  Ziggy Stardust was a good song however.  Nault does get his team to play hard and does a nice job with them.  Don’t be foolish enough to think that only a great record means a team is playing hard or a coach is getting the most out of his or her’s players.  There are teams with 500 records that the coach has squeezed every bit of puss out of.  Since your puffing your Raider chest out, you might want to mention the guy who does the most with the least every year.  Leo Parent does a great job at Pentucket.  Tildsley gets his girls to play hard at Andover.  From what I saw last year the St. Johns Prep coach gets his kids to play hard.  Again I think Nault does a great job as well.  People have short memories at Central, the guy who used to coach there did a pretty good job too.

Rock the Cradle of Love, you can have your opinion and we can agree to disagree but comparing how hard the CCHS boys play defense to the AHS girls team is quite humerous at best.  I know they are a good team with a good coach but to compare their intensity with that of the the CC boys varsity is in your words “foolish”.  You are right Leo does a great job at Pentucket he would have been my choice after RN for the open position at CC (did Leo even apply?) when DL retired.  Speaking of which my memory is not short at all-I played for DL and watched him coach since about 1980… I know he was a good coach but he also had lots of talent over the years and never got the banner raising victories. Like you said he did a “pretty good job” over his 20+ years  but RN has done much more than a “pretty good job”.

  • MVCfan

R4L- I’m with you on thinking RN is an excellent coach.  I’m not so confident on the RN over DL argument quite yet- give it a few years.  You cannot compare the level of talent that Dickie had over 20+ years to what Ricky has had in his first few years mainly because Carson Desrosiers was simply a game changer in a way that no one else in this area has been.  Leo P was a 6’6″ beast and impossible HS matchup. My favorite CC player ever and an excellent college player at Lowell.  But Carson changed other team’s game plans and attacks in a way Leo never could.  When Dickie got truly game changing talent (read Scott H) they won the big ones.  Without CD last year CC lost in the North semis just like a lot of the good CC teams did in the 80′s and 90′s.  Time will tell if Ricky’s teams will win over the long haul at any rate better than Dickie’s but let’s not rush to crown him yet. Either way though we’ve been lucky to have 2 great coaches at the helm.  And CC was unquestionably the team of the decade in MA in the 2000′s which is a credit to both of them.

One other coach to add to the list of good local coaches- better throw the Brooks guy into that discussion.  Saw them scrimmage at CC last year and that’s a well coached and very good team.

MVC, I hear you.  DL was a legend for sure.  You can see his coaching tree extend through the region–some real good coaches grew from his roots.

    7.  On a different topic, I have to praise the Haverhill Girls Basketball team.  They have managed to defeat towns from New Hampshire this season that the republican candiates couldn’t even find on their campaign trail.

Hector why no bloggage about HHS Girls teams. Bball should be ashamed of what has been allowed to happen to that once historic program. you wrote a Good/bad/ugly on HHS

I think the girls program will come back in Haverhill.
    I see women like Shawna
Murphy Mottram, Caitlyn Masys, Beth Eddy getting back in the youth ranks, a youth program that had just about disappeared. I feel like they will build it back.
Used to love covering those Woelfel-coached teams. Those girls knew how to play the game the right way.
They were the measure by which all other programs should be and still are judged. The fact that they have to go chase games at Dixville Notch, Pinkham Notch and Smuggler’s Notch is just too bad.
One year of building up a phony won-loss tab was enough. They need to get back into the MVC and compete.

    R4L,

Before Ricky’s ascension to the top of the heap please remember that for decades, Dick Licare and every one else had to play the wood.
Dickie’s early teams had to face the likes of Cambridge with Rumeal and the three (scholarship) Middleton brothers at Lex, a Don Bosco team for two years featuring four D1 scholarship guys and a pair of pretty good D1 athletes in Chung Rivera and Scott Stapleton at Lowell High. The bulk of those guys would be at prep schools in this era.

Hector, the CC website says that the Saturday game against Lawrence has been rescheduled.  Do you know if they have just moved it to an earlier time or is it actually a different day?  Thanks for the help

  • Tmn4fun

Never mind, just got todays paper and it show the game starting at 5.

  • Jbowie

Are u saying that girls can’t be as intense as boys?  You haven’t watched Andover’s girls play if you don’t think they are intense.  Actually the toughest hoop teams I have seen in this area are the Haverhill girls teams during their glory years.  They got after people.  On a current note, when is Puello coming back for Central?

  • Anonymous

Re-load??? Don’t you mean RE-CRUIT!!! Funny all the big games coming up are against other private schools. Why is that? Congrats, you have a nice long winning streak against teams that are limited to the kids that live and play in there hometowns. How’s the record against the other recruiting schools?

Hec, what are the chances they change Sunday’s CC-Prep gametime?  A noon tip-off would be ideal.  You think they’d ever make this change?

  • Sp0rtsfan

Yesterday’s Trib had a small piece in a notes column quoting Nault saying a time/date change is not an option. They will play as scheduled. CC/SJP is part of a double header…I believe the girls tip off at 3, playing a ranked Mass team (forget who, but I believe they are ranked ahead of CC). Too bad…I’d take in both games if they were Saturday, or next Sunday (NFL bye week) for sure…great reason to get out on a winter, weekend afternoon. But I’ll spend this Sunday in Foxboro, from 10AM on…
