After mulling over both football and baseball options, North Andover’s Brandon Walsh has committed to play baseball at UMass Amherst. We’ll have more on the Walsh decision in Friday’s Eagle-Tribune.

By the way, took in some of the Reebok fall ball in North Andover.
Saw Lawrence taken out by an impressive looking Andover team, which you have to figure looks like the team to beat in the MVC this winter.
James Costello looked like he’s picked up where he left off last year, and Sam Dowden and Craig Luschenat each looked stronger and more confident as the Warriors beat a scrappy Lawrence team by 20.
No sight of the two promising freshmen, Merinder and Giribaldi, either. Giribaldi is still going through practices with the Warrior football team. Andover was very impressive.

In the nightcap, North Andover, with three starters back from last year, beat the daylights out of defending Division 1 champ St. John’s Prep.
The Knights had Mike Moroney, Zach Karalis and Colby Smith but were without Derek Collins, the subject of the worst-kept secret in town — that is he’s done for the years — and Jimmy Warden.
Still, they dominated the Prep, who has just about everyone back except for Pat Connaughton.
It’s only fall ball, but remember, the Knights will add sweet-shooting big man Isaiah Nelsen to the mix after Turkey Day, and look out.

Looks like the freshman, Ben Judson, who comes out of the Timberlane Travel program, is set to play a major role at SJP. The folks at Rivals love this kid. Clearly, the Rivals influence is there as the 6-foot-3 frosh saw time on the point and two-guard, where most players his size just play back to the basket.
Kid looks like he could be very good.

Ok Hector you are now on the record for picking Andover to win the MVC over CC.

Went to the games tonight in North Andover.  What a great way to get ready for the regular season for players and fans.  Hector, Central beat Andover 75-55 and had it over 20 in both halfs and that is them only have a 15 minute break between the semi finals against a good looking NA team that CC beat by about 15 points.  As you said “its only fall ball” but unless Andover was missing kids to football I don’t think they beat CC out for the MVC.  Andovers big 3 are very solid player for sure but it appeared that CC goes 7 or 8 deep.  This CC team is different then past years because right now they don’t have a true big man that is a scoring threat (although the big Soph looks like he will develop as one).  This team has 4 or 5 kids who can knock down the 3′s.  They also will need to work on bringing the ball up court and develop their point guards.

No, there will be no 6’11″s or even 6’7″s.  But Central is very fast, very good shooters, very athletic, and they play signature maniacal RN defense.  Is there a proven, natural point?  No.  But we’ve been down that road with Central before, haven’t we.

Best of luck to all the kids playing on Thanksgiving nex week.  It’s a special time of year, especially for the seniors.

Sorry, but all I can say is I think Andover has the best talent, by a solid margin, in the area.
Central has the confidence from being there, the mystique from beating Andover repeatedly and the mystique. At some point, doesn’t talent kick in and take over.
Remember, Andover played without two impact freshman, the football player Giribaldi and the big 6-foot-5 kid Merinder.
Merinder was arguably the best 8th-grader in the region last year.
His presence allows both Dowden and Costello to open things up a bit and play on the perimeter. It’s a height matchup with Central that should be favorable and Andover will be ultimately able to exploit.
Sorry, on paper, the power has shifted.

    Hec,

Why has the big frosh Meriender not been around the last few weeks with the rest of his his varsity teammates. Did something happen to him?

No clue. Didn’t he play soccer? I seem to remember seeing his name there.
