Wow, an impressive night over on Hampshire Street with the Raiders and Warriors.
I’ve said it before, Central, which rolled 61-47, is just too big and talented for Andover.
Does that mean the Warriors won’t be able to pull off an upset, say in March?
Not necessarily, but it’s clear the Warriors are struggling with themselves right now.
Andover looks out of synch, they look like they are searching for an identity.
Honestly, I’d like to see the Warriors just once play with reckless abandon, as if they have nothing to lose. In my eyes, it’s almost like Andover plays like they are supposed to win and it works as a detriment.
The Warriors have to embrace the “David” role to CC’s Goliath.
I know it’s easier said than done. They’ve been told not to be intimidated by the monster Central over and over again. Just a thought, but at this point, the number is 12 losses in a row. Time for drastic measures.

Great crowd, great atmosphere tonight at CC.
Some thoughts on the game.

First, I thought the game was pretty well-officiated right up until the fourth quarter disqualifications of Central’s Evan Sheehan and Andover’s Spenser Rose.
The two got caught up in a pushing match at a point that was strictly garbage time. They were quickly separated, then disqualfied for fighting. That will now cost each the next game.
Had I been holding the whistle I might have just told the coaches to get them both out of the game.
But they got tossed, and both teams have to live with it.
That means Friday night against Lawrence, CC will be without a key reserve in Sheehan and possibly without Jimmy Zenevitch, who went down with what looked like a high ankle sprain.

Sheehan delivered his best game I’ve seen for the Raiders last night, scoring seven points, all in the second quarter. He hit a big 3 when Andover was basically playing 5 players packed in the paint, daring CC to shoot.

Of course, it’s tough to feel sorry for Rick Nault, who literally has gone 9-10 deep at times.
Last night, it was the little man, Jose Batistine coming off the bench to play the point and deliver solid minutes.

I didn’t think I’d see a better rebounding performance than Katie Zenevitch’s 22 board game against Andover Sunday night.
And then Carson Desrosiers goes and rips down 23 last night to go with 11 points and six blocks.

Tough not to tag onto Central’s road ahead. Friday night, Sunday at Bishop Hendricken, Tuesday against the Hillies and then in the finale with unbeaten St. John’s Prep.

You know, time to get a little serious here.
D.J. Fazio, who admittedly at times is his own worst enemy, delivered a solid effort with a team-high 12 points in the loss. More importantly, DJ played hard and under control, like a gentleman. He gets railed hard by the opposition fans. Folks forget he’s a kid and stick him with cheap shots. It’s nice to see the kid succeed, even in a loss.

Good stuff though, tonight. And March is coming.
This is clearly a grea time.

Hec, Good synopsis. I've never seen more Central students at a regular season game. No way the fourth quarter bumping warranted two game ejections. A clear over reaction by an otherwise solid crew. Yes, DJ played better and more in control, but where were the rest of the Warriors?? It was an offensive funk by Andover. And yes, DJ gets razzed by Central's students. But did you get a glimpse of Jimmy Z getting a drink of water with the Andover section in his grill? The kid was cool, and delivered. The final score was closer than the game played in the second half. Note to future opponents: If you don't turn Central over, you're in big trouble. And that goes for anyone. Central has reduced turnovers in the last two games and the final scores have reflected it; up 20+ on both Lowell and Andover late in the game. Turnovers allowed Lawrence and Dracut to hang around in recent weeks but it looks like a thing of the past. Still some big tests coming up with Hendricken, Prep, and Comcast. At this point, I think we're looking at a #2 seed in D1 North with a likely matchup against Prep, Andover, and/or Everett prior to LE.

  • david1997

    Love this team.

  • nandoverfan

Hector, pretty good summary. Thought that after the take down/tackle of Zenevitch, Fazio should have sat his player to send a message to his team – Andover was clearly frustrated being down 20 and getting way too chippy. Fazio didn't sit the kid – the message was undelivered and that is precisely what led to the disqualifications (which I agreed with btw b/c the emotions were running too high).

Love Ricky, but why is Jimmy Z. in the game with 5 to go and a 20 point lead after he had just returned from his first tweak?

And agreed on DJ – good for you kid. You've taken a lot of abuse; your team was clearly off; you faced intense defensive pressure all game long – but you came to play and you kept your cool. Great to see that.

For anyone who agreed with the silly comments by Andover's infamous “Ms. Doherty” about CCHS fans at AHS – I hope you witnessed last night – a total breakdown by AHS school administrators and despicable behavior by about 10 AHS kids who were lucky they weren't arrested. An AHS kid gets on the floor before the game; takes his shirt off and pretends to moon the CCHS fans while slapping his rear? My 5 year old has to see this? The AHS fans were literally pointing and screaming into the faces of CCHS players from a distance of 1-2 feet and the AHS principal laughs as he asks them to stop? And then it continues? Someone takes a mock swing at Carson Desrosiers? Totally despicable. Andover fans should be ashamed of themselves and whoever that AHS principal/AD was should be FIRED.

  • david1997

nandoverfan, If your going to be that sensitive about your 5yr old son seeing things at a High school basketball game, than I don't think you should bring him to the game. Remember, you brought him to a high school basketball game were there are high school kids. I'm sure he didn't know what that kid was doing in the middle of the floor. I think we all could agree at every school even CCHS, there are kids that are going to act like kids.

  • raider4life

D97 just like everything on this blog you think YOU KNOW–why would you assume YOU know what NAfan's child understands and doesn't understand–please explain to me how you are “sure he didn't know what the kid was doing”.
Maybe you should stop going to the games…or at least stop commenting on things of which you don't understand.

  • david1997

raider4life, This is about high school kids acting like high school kids. The kid took off his shirt not his pants. I'm sure all kids even the CCHS kids got a laugh out of it. I know I did. Come on. Don't you remember going to high school games when you were in High school. It was high school kids having fun at a high school game.

  • raider4life

Doesn't surprise me that you think that is funny-enough said.

  • nandoverfan

David 1997 – You're being an apologist for behavior that's clearly over the line. Is it ok for an AHS kid to spit on Jimmy Z during the national anthem? Is it ok for AHS kids to cheer when Jimmy Z gets hurt? Is it ok for an AHS kid to get on the court, strip down to his waist, bend over and mimic a sexual act during the game? Is it ok for AHS kids to be screaming at the tops of their lungs from 1-2 feet away from the faces of CCHS players “You're a F —- faggot?” How about starting a chant about a CCHS Marist brother who was present “touching” CCHS students?

If you think that's “high school kids being high school kids” then you're ignorant. It's boorish behavior which should not be tolerated by either school. If it is tolerated, then it will end up being handled the way these things have always been handled – with fights.

I've been going to HS basketball games all my life and since I was about my son's age. That you would suggest that it's a bad idea for someone to bring kids under 10 to a high school basketball game or that we should expect that they should be exposed to such stupidity smacks of idiocy on your part.

Of all the games I have ever attended it's only with one or two exceptions that I have seen fans act like those 10-20 AHS fans did last night. In each of those exceptions, the fans spitting in and getting into players faces like that got fists right back. It's a credit to the CCHS players and students that this did not happen last night. Contrast that with the AHS AD standing there grinning – reprehensible and it's a matter that should immediately be brought up in front of the Andover School Committee.

    Few things, if I may…
First off, been going to Central games regularly since Licare's first season (1979 or 80). Never, ever, has the atmosphere been like it was last night. Just insane…from about 6:50 PM and on. I was luckly enough to grab a balcony spot right behind the Central student section, and could tell they had several choreographed chants/ events planned as their leaders shouted last minute instructions as the JV game ended. And they did not disappoint.
The parting of the Red Sea was quite possibly the best thing I have seen at a basketball game (by the fans) in my life….and that's thousands of games, be it high school or college. No antics I have ever seen on ESPN equal the well timed “parting of the Sea”, which is exactly what it looked like. When the kid walked onto the floor dressed as Moses, my initial though was, “Wow, look at this idiot”, but alas, I was the idiot. Great great stuff. And for those who stayed till the end, aftre the hand shake…another well timed celebration, as Carson came over to signal the fans, and they then (well after the final whisle, 7 minutes or so) rushed the court to form a cirlce and celebrate under the hoop. Great stuff.
    Now the basketball…
I was standing with Jimmy's father, who assured me the injury was simply Jimmy cramping up, which, he told me, he is prone to do. It sure looked like an ankle sprain to me, but I noticed the shoe never was taken off, and would much rather believe his father's version…crapms go away very quicly, an ankle sprain…not so much.
I could only wonder what the Christ they put in his (Jim Z's) water at half time, as he came out with the first 7 points of the half for Central, showing both great touch (on the 3 pointer) and beastly moves down low. Truly a second half scoring machine. Just strapped the whole team to his back. In the first half, it seemed as though there was a lid on the hoop for him, other than his soft pull up jumper from the elbow to end the first quarter.
Hector…was surprised to see no mention in the Trib of Sheehan's two (not one, two) back door, clear robbery pick pockets, of Andover ball handlers while they were working the ball around the perimeter. He came out of nowhere both times, and, both times drove the length of the floor for successful layins. Leaving Andover to think, “what the hell was that” both times. Impressive stuff.
Carson was Carson to be sure…simply a beast down low, and great awarness up top. A treat to watch. I though he got robbed on his 1st half slam. Instead of the “and one”, they called him for a walk. I didn't see it that way.
Right on the money about Fazio…when numer 24 (I think) was falling late in the game, he very obviously grabbed Jim Z jersey, and yanked him down intentionally. I saw it as plain as day and fully expected Fazio to read him the riot act, and pull him. But HE LEAVES HIM IN THE GAME???!!!. Weird. My only thought is that maybe Dave did not see what happened.
I too watched in amazement, as the Andover fans leaned over the end of the Central bench, actaully coming into conatct with players at times. The fool in the gold, long sleeve tshirt actually got in Jimmy Zenn's way when he tried to take a seat, and screamed in his face. Eventually the Andover AD found his way over there, and sat for the rest of the game.
Agree fully with your comments on DJ…great shooter. And it seems he is maturing a bit as he no longer let's the crowd get to
him. Very nice to see on two or three occasions, loose balls contented for, where players came together, and crashed out of bounds, that they helped each other up. And ended it with a “fist pound”. Saw DJ do this twice, and thought to myself that it would not have been like that a year ago. He has come a long way.
Last night was the best $5 I have spent in my 43 years.

  • sp0rtsfan

I retract what I wrote about the possible cramps for Jimmy Zen. I just looked thru the 16 phots the Trib has posted on it's site. And they show a kid sitting on the bench in very serious pain. Almost looks scared in one of them.
Maybe time to sacrifice a few games if needed to be ready for the tourney. Running the table with wins over St Johns and Bishop Hen might be fun, but they need to keep their eyes on the prize.
I'm thinking that if he is out on Friday, and you combo it with the obvious emotional step down from last night, that the Lawrence game will be the end of the run. You heard it here first.

  • david1997

nandoverfan, You only have raider4life in your corner and that's not a good thing. You keep saying it was AHS sudents. You don't know if they were Methuen, Lawrence or the non-thinkable North Andover sudent that just went to game with friends. You saw alot more than everyone else did. I think you, raider4life and Ms. Doherty shouldn't go to anymore CCHS vs AHS games. You 3 and your kids just can't handle it.

  • nandoverfan

David1997 – You no longer smack of idiocy – you are an idiot.

    Apparently sportsfan saw similar stuff:

“I too watched in amazement, as the Andover fans leaned over the end of the Central bench, actaully coming into conatct with players at times. The fool in the gold, long sleeve tshirt actually got in Jimmy Zenn's way when he tried to take a seat, and screamed in his face. Eventually the Andover AD found his way over there, and sat for the rest of the game.”

  • John Stark

fan, looked like a cramp the first time Jimmy went out but I think Rick Nault is quoted as saying a “high ankle sprain” on the two-point takedown. You could tell that Andover was very, very frustrated at that point. Their seniors go out 0 for four years vs. Central, banning a catastrophe in the tourney.

David, I too love this team right now. But you get the sense that somebody other than Jimmy and Carson will need to step up with a consistent 10-12 pts. in the tournament. Also, they were 9 for 18 from the line last night and, in a close game, that matters a lot. And how does Carson only get to the line four times in a 32 minute scrum?? Defensively, just ask Brumanti. Very few open looks with Jaycob draped over him. Are there two better defensive guards anywhere right now than Jaycob and Luis?

Not to pile on but big kudos to the Central kids for turning out, and big thumbs down to the Andover AD who was clearly over his head. If a CC kid did (and he wouldn't dare) what that Andover kid did he would be thrown out of the gym and suspended from school, at the very least.

  • raider4life

D97-your posts makes us all dummer after reading them…
but thanks for the insight into your brain–where the hoop knowledge is scarce and you cannot comprehend right from wrong.

  • sp0rtsfan

d1997…I saw it all. From the balcony behind the Central students, I could see everything very very clearly that was taking place on or near the Central bench. How in God's name noone could see potential problems with Andover students (very clearly Andover students, NO QUESTION) actually sitting/standing on the Central bench during warm ups is beyond me. And, when Jimmy Zen came out for the first time in the first half, the moron wearing the long sleeve gold tshirt completely invaded his personal space. Never mind a basketball game. He got as close to him as a boyfriend/girlfriend cuddling in the stands. Jimmy just ignored him, but I just kept thinking, “my God, there's going to be a fight.” There was a student of VERY SLIGHT build, in a Central sweater, probably a team manager, who got spooked off during this event, and actually vacated his seat, and watched from afar. Eventually, before the Andover AD made it over, a blond woman (cougar?) who I think was the trainer, sat down in front of this kid, and he still leaned over her shoulder. I'm all for trying to shake up the other team by yelling, but probably doing it from the very first row behind the bench is a bad idea.

  • George_T_Kattar

Once again, Andover students and school administrators disgrace themselves.

It's natural for public school kids to envy those whose parents care enough to send their children to an elite, private school like CCHS. It's also natural for Andover students and school administrators to bear resentment for CCHS athletic teams that regularly beat Andover teamsas if they were Perkins School for the Blind. Having said that, it is the responsibility of Andover High to show sportsmanship and class – but it's quite obvious that they possess neither.

  • AHSAlum

George that comment just proves that you are an idiot. I gaurentee almost all kids from AHS go off to better colleges and kids from CCHS. AHS is probably a better school academically than CCHS. And just because a couple idiots do something stupid, doesn't mean the whole AHS population acts like that. Trust me, no one at AHS envies kids that go to Central, so get over yourself

  • david1997

nandoverfan, You blogged 10 things happen at the game. sp0rtsfan only said 1 thing happen. It seems to me you were more interested in what was happening in the crowd than the game. Still nobody knows it they were AHS fans or friends from another town that just went to the game. George_T_Kattar, You are a sorry man. raider4life, You and George_T_Kattar must be friends because he is a very sad man.

  • John Stark

David: You're right. A bunch of kids from Methuen and Lawrence got together with kids from Andover and decided to sit together and, for disguise, all wear blue and yellow t-shirts. I'm sure the kid who wore his Andover hockey jersey was really a Lawrence kid in disguise, too. And to expand the hoax, NA kids painted their faces blue and yellow to root for their rival in a mid-season game. Are you serious!!!??? Sadly, I believe you are. It was a good, though not terribly competitive game, but the Andover contingent did little to distinguish itself. We are all fortunate it didn't turn into something very ugly. Might I suggest that the Central administration rope off the first three rows of bleachers in that section prior to Andover's next visit to Hampshire Street? Any word on Jimmy's availability vs. Lawrence?

  • raider4life

D97 I am going to say this once real s-l-o-w-l-y for you so you can comprehend it. I do not think negatively about any school in the MVC, I do not think Central kids are any better than any other kids. I know that kids will act like kids and do dumb things sometimes regardless of school/color/creed.
Here is the thing D97, I also believe (as CCHS does) in holding the young men & women who are students at these games accountable for their actions. You are so ready to make excuses for everyone…as are too many people in today's world.

You and I should just stick to hoops “between the lines”-as I am sure we will never see eye to eye on these other topics.

Looking forward to a good game VS Lawrence–Paul & Co. always seem to give us fits.

  • George_T_Kattar

I know it's upsetting to you to see so many CCHS kids attend MIT, Stanford and other elite Ivy League Schools. Don't worry just because most Andover High grads attend schools like NECCO or Bridgewater State, if they attend college at all.

I also know that it is painful to watch your athletic teams get beaten like red-headed stepchildren over and over and over again by CCHS.

Listen, it could be worse. Afterall, CCHS accepts 1 out of every 5 Andover kids that apply and most of them actually make it past Freshman year.

You really need to curb the envy. It's ugly.

  • david1997

John Stark, nandoverfan said that all these things happening at the game were all AHS fans. I don't believe it. Were there some AHS fans being a problem, Ya OK. What about the other 9 things that he blogged about. You can't say they were all AHS fans, come on. George_T_Kattar, Please tell me your not the Kattar family from Methuen. You are a very sad man. raider4life is George_T_Kattar a friend of yours, because if he is stop him from blogging. We all know CCHS is above all schools. I can tell you and him went there and you 2 are there final product.

  • sp0rtsfan

This is getting a little too nasty for my taste…no longer can be considered “all in good fun”.
I want to make some final points of my own, if I may.
First off, they WERE Andover students who tried to stir up trouble on the Central bench. No question..case closed. However, it was only a few (3 or 4) actually trying to cause a problem, and to say the Andover High student body disgraced itself, is simply not accurate. It was only a few donkeys. I admire the passion of the other kids.
Next…to say Andover students are envious of Central kids is probably a mis-statement of fact. I'm sure it a fine school. That being said..the fool who stated the AHS kids go to better colleges, also mis-spoke. While I'm sure the AHS kids receive a fine education, my guess would be the facts are that private school students get into better colleges.
Also…clearly Central is on a major upswing in hoops right now, and owns Andover. But I have nothing but respect for AHS athletics. It wasn't that long ago they ruled the state in baseball.
And there is no question their head basketball coach is a class act, and a smart basketball mind. You see, he went to a good school, and got a proper education. I remember his playing days, as he was a year ahead of me. All guts! And seeing as though who his mentor was, he couldn't miss.
The potential injury to Jim Z is a shame, as it seemed this team was starting to solve the turnover issue, Shaheen is starting to really contribute, and things were jelling very nicely. This fly in the ointment really could derail what could be a “once in a lifetime” team.
If he is out, I'll look forward to seeing Carson having to concentrate a bit less on being up top, and posting up time and again. I would imagine he will be asked to pick up the slack for the 20/25 point that Jimmy Z gets every night.
    Injury update??? Anybody?

  • david1997

sp0rtsfan, You said ( While I'm sure the AHS kids receive a fine education, my guess would be the facts are that private school students get into better colleges. ) You really didn't just blog this.

Kattar you need to get your facts straight. Over 95% Of AHS seniors attend college. And i gaurentee you the top 15% of AHS kids go to schools just as good or better than top 15% of CCHS kids. And MOST AHS grads DO NOT attend NECCO or BSU. The ignorance that you possess is just comical and saddening. There is abosultely no envy on my part, i am very happy I attended AHS and beat CCHS regularly in the sports that I Played. You need to figure it out my man
