And now the real season begins.
The holidays are in the rear-view mirror, the heart of league schedules starts to unfold, and it’s time to recalibrate with the latest Fantastic Four.
1. Central Catholic – Of course, it’s the Greater Lawrence Christmas tourney champs, who have stormed to the front without being asked at all.
And now, the rich get richer as transfer Evan Sheehan is allowed to join the 5-0 Raiders. How does Sheehan fit? Coach Rick Nault isn’t sure yet, although he said, “we have to get him minutes, I know that.”
Sheehan should provide some perimeter relief offensively and give opponents, already stretched thin, just one more option to deal with.
2a, 2b, 2c …. I don’t know, you tell me.
Andover’s claim to the No. 2 spot is a two-point theft against rival North Andover, a game we all agree the Warriors didn’t really deserve.
Lawrence handled the NH contingent, slaying Pinkerton and Salem in the Christmas tourney, but I’m not exactly sold on a 31-point loss to Eastie.
All NA had to do was finish the deal against, and the door would have been kicked in.
Instead, it’s a 5-1 start and a trip to the mire that is the small pack behind Central.
Honestly, barring Pinkerton or Salem finding themselves in the Granite State, it’s no secret that the Fantastic Four most likely won’t be taking on any newcomers.
The Creature’s region is not a deep one in 2010.
A few notes to round out the opening of what should be a pretty solid week of hoop.
Talked to Andover’s Dave Fazio about a possible slide up to 7 or 6:30 for Thursday night’s showdown with Central Catholic, to accommodate my insatiable need to watch the BCS championship game.
No go, unfortunately on that one.
“D-V-R!” was Fazio’s only response to my plight.
You’d hope that he and Rick Nault would forge some kind of pact to at least not allow their JV coaches any timeouts and then hold themselves to a limit of three each in the varsity game.
I can beg, can’t I?
Not exactly the start Dan Habib was looking for with the 1-5 Reggies.
Adding a little frustration to the mix was a recent bout of missed practices for Greater Lawrence, which heads to powerhouse Lynn Tech Tuesday.
“We’ll be shorthanded, but we have to get our guys back and going the right way,” said Habib.
A key part of that improvement equation could be Yeltsin Colon, but he remains on the outside looking in, according to Habib. “He’s practiced a couple days, but he’s still not part of the team,” said Habib.
Still, with Don Celestin around, if the Reggies can rally, there is plenty of time to turn things around.
Speaking of looking to try and turn things around, winless Haverhill is in a tight spot because of no Christmas tourney activity.
The Hillies face a slate of Tuesday-Friday-Sunday game weeks right through the month of January, which severely shackles Mike Trovato’s need for practice time.
Disciplined returners Dennis Drinkmeyer and Andrew Connolly will miss both Tuesday night with Tewksbury and Friday night with Lawrence before returning Sunday against Pentucket.
“Should make a huge difference,” said Trovato, who continues to hitch his club on the Noah Vonleh wagon.
The highly-touted frosh is averaging 19.0 points a game in the early going.
A look at some key games in the week ahead:
Tuesday
Portsmouth at Pelham, 6:30 p.m. … It’s a rematch of the 2009 Class I title game. Do either of these teams have the stuff to make a return trip? The Pythons’ confidence has to be a little shaky after an 0-3 stint in the Lowell Christmas tourney. Nobody is tearing it up offensively like Stephen Spirou (29.0 ppg) right now.
Salem at Pinkerton, 7 p.m. … I’ll say it again. Pinkerton has the talent to compete for the Class L title. Who in NH can play with this front court? Answer: Nobody. But you don’t win games on potential. Salem has carved its niche among Class L’s elite by knocking off teams that are hungry to step up the ladder. Potentially the last battle between childhood friends Ben Proulx and Alex LaRosa, should be a good one.
Thursday
Central Catholic at Andover, 7:30 p.m.: Yeah, it’s the game of the week.
Friday
Chelsea at Whittier, 5 p.m. … The road to the CAC title might run through Lynn, but Chelsea is thought of by many as the team to beat in 2010.
Londonderry at Trinity, 7 p.m. … LaGuerre is no longer a Pioneer, but Madol certainly is. Big night for the Lancers to announce their presence with authority.
Dover at Salem, 7 p.m. … Mr. Burt is the man in charge. Alex Burt and the Queen City Invitational champion Green Wave.
