Let’s start with the baseball, where the news out of Andover is that interviews for the job stripped from coach Ken Maglio were held this week.
According to sources, six candidates were involved in the mix, including Maglio, who interviewed Wednesday.
As late as a week ago, names like former Warrior coach Dave Bettencourt, ex-Warrior and current AAU mentor Dave Blank, JV coach Dan Grams and ex-Warrior and former North Reading assistant Ben Gibson had been in the mix.
Can’t confirm any of those others interviewing, though.
Sprinted over to the Hillies and Andover Wednesday night, right after Ollie Longo’s masterful performance at the Christmas Concert held at the Silver Hill Horace Mann Charter School in Haverhill.
My immediate thoughts? First, David Fazio is in a tough spot. The Warriors are playing more than a handful of odd nights, like this one, so Faz can watch his daughter Aly on court with the Andover girls.
Fazio has to be a dad first, so he’s done all he could to alter the slate. Still, that sets him up for some tough matchups as teams like BC High, which had ample opportunity to scout on Wednesday. BC High played Tuesday, while Fazio was supporting the Warrior girls.
Noah Vonleh, who had an assistant coach from Providence stop by Haverhill this week just to check in, continues to draw rave reviews from the folks who watch this 14-year-old Hillie grow with every minute on the floor.
The only problem is that he is a 14-year-old go-to guy as coach Mike Trovato deals with some injuries and a couple of painful suspensions.
Trovato is attempting to do things the right away, refusing to relent and that takes a lot of guts.
And, oh by the way, the Hillies are by no means the only club with a fab frosh in the mix. Andover started 6-foot-3 Sam Dowden to go with the anchor front four of D.J. Fazio, Joe Bramanti, Brian Miller and Jimmy Johnson.
“He works hard, I can tell you that,” said Fazio of Dowden.
OK, finally, it seems like an eternity, but our first real winter Friday night, with a full slate of hoops, has arrived.
Where you going tonight?
That BC High-Andover clash looks to be solid as the Warriors take a step up the competition ladder after two cruises.
How about a little matinee action, well at least a prelim for the night card, with the 5 p.m. tap of Whittier Tech and Greater Lawrence. How can new coach Tom Sipsey and the Cats deal with Teflon Don Celestin and the Reggies?
North Andover and Masco collide in a matchup of CAL powers. If I’m not mistaken, though, this one goes own as a non-leaguer. But I’m not sure of that one.
Schizophrenic Lawrence, which one MVC coach told me is better than Andover, heads to Methuen. And up in the Granite State Alex LaRosa and Co. host Nashua North in what will surely turn into a football game on the hardwood.
Central Catholic doesn’t play, but hosts Lowell Saturday. We have tipoff at 5 p.m. I would hope someone in the Raider camp could chime in and straighten me out if the info is incorrect.
Before I get to my first Fantastic Four of the winter, can I just state for the record that I am:
a. Against the Christmas tournament splitting the first day of action into two nights. It wreaks of a cash grab.
b. Against the Christmas tournament beginning before Christmas. This is a holiday tournament and it’s supposed to be played on the holiday vacation. I realize with Christmas on a Friday that kind of douses the schedule for a prime night, but there’s no reason this can’t be played the 27th, 28th and 30th.
That said, I love the Christmas tournament, everything about it. And I can’t wait for it to open Tuesday night.
OK, here’s the first Fantastic Four. I’ve thought long and hard on this one, lamented too.
Since it’s the first poll of the year, I’ll go backward.
4. Lawrence – Maybe some think the Lancers are better this year. I look at the guy who graduated, Justin Nieves, and what he poured into this program. Has to take a hit. That said, until I learn to spell Yadoris Arias correctly, I have to respect the group Paul Neal has assembled. Sources out of the city of sin tell me the Lawtown-ers slugged it out with English in a scrimmage favorably. That’s good enough for me.
3. North Andover- To tell you the truth, the sting of them in football, with me overrating the Knights and picking them to win the league, only to see Masco cruise on Turkey Day, hurt me a lot. That said, I like the Knights a lot, especially with the emerging frosh, Derek Collins. A win in the Christmas opener with Andover would go miles on the respect-ometer.
2. Andover – Speaking of the Warriors, they are just a smidge off the lead in what clearly, at least to me, looks like a two-horse race. One slipup and this team could claim the conference, the Christmas tourney, even the North.
1. Central Catholic – Carson Desrosiers. Wake Forest. Enough said.
League picks
MVC large – Central, Andover will win once if they meet twice, once if they meet three times and twice if they meet four times.
MVC small – I know they lost a tough one to Lowell and Dracut absolutely rolled over Groton-Dunstable, but I’ll take Methuen’s grit.
CAL large – Just think it’s NA’s year, now don’t let me down.
CAL small – Casey’s Hornets with Manchester.
NH Class L – Trinity to repeat even without Laguerre. The Pioneers have the one marquee athlete in the class in Madol. Local interests: I’d rank them 1. Londonderry (as long as Matt Sanborn returns to the fold); 2. Pinkerton – Two solid big guys and an enrollment the size of your average Midwest town; 3. Salem – Who else can put the ball in the hole besides Amazing Alex; 4. Timberlane – baby steps for the Owls.

Great blog, I really think Andover is being hype to much. Andover will never beat Central Catholic, even on Central Catholic worst day. I'm not a Central Catholic fan but, they are a great ball club with a great coach. What you heard about Lawrence is true and they will prove it during the year. They will beat Andover. I also love the Christmas tournament. Central Catholic will win the Christmas tourney, I think that is a giving. The Central Catholic game with Andover, if it happens, will be hype as the game of the year. If this game is played during the Christmas tourney, Central Catholic will end there hype of being the team to beat them. The MVC and the Christmas tourney is all about Central Catholic. Games being played during the Christmas tourney other than the one's with Central Catholic, will be great games to come and watch.

Hec, you are correct on the CCHS info…Sat @ 5 vs Lowell @ CCHS

  • the_other_side

Hec, any idea why the CAL doesn't count some games between league teams as league games? Last year NA lost to Wilmington in a similar game and it was the difference as NA was awarded the CAL Large championship…

  • John Stark

Dittos to raider4life: CC home vs Lowell @5. If it's closer than 15-18 pts. it will be a surprise. And Hec, perhaps you could weigh in on how some schools (e.g. Lawrence, Billerica, Chelmsford) were deemed to be either “Small” or “Large” schools during the football season, but are now the opposite in hoops. Another instance of 'jackets and trophies'?

  • NA Fan

Good question: Everyone in the CAL only plays once officially for the league. Masco, NA, and Wilm have agreed to play each other a second time to preserve the home and home aspect and since those have been the most competitive games in the past decade. NA actually beat Wilm both times last year- once by 15 and once in OT, and Wilm beat them twice two years ago, so you're thinking of 3 years ago I think. But in principal, you're right: It's only the 1 league game that counts toward the championship and the teams could split and still have only one of them be the champs. Not sure it's how I'd do it, but it's what the CAL AD's agreed on.

    A few thoughts.

Where have the point guards gone? Where are the create first/team first guys on the point? Does anybody have one. Andover? Forget it–he's a gunner. Central ? Nobody–their “recruiters” should all be fired—they haven't had anyone in 2 years—they have a lot of difficulty even getting the ball to half court. Methuen or Lawrence?

Pretty lousy of th No And AD, BB coach and principal and the way they handled the Evan Sheehan fiasco. They refused to check the “no recruit” box when they knew he wasn't recruited–maybe Central should refuse to check it the next time the situation is reversed. There's a special place in hell for an adult “administrator” who tries to prevent a kid from playing sports and ,not for nothing, did this same AD follow all the rules on the drinking issue involving NA student-athletes last fall? Same question for the Andover AD for the Halloween “Ball”.

Watch out for Lawrence–they're looking good–Paul has put together another no-name line-up that's as fast as lightening.

    Game on!

  • david1997

4mvc, Where have the point guards gone? Methuen has Mike Gorman. He is only a Jr. and he is the best point guard in the MVC. Watch this kid play, he's as cool as ice. He has it all. His only problem is, he has all football players on his team. There is him and 4 football player on the starting lineup. Even the reserves coming off the bench are football players. Put this kid with real basketball players and than you would see why he is the best point guard in the MVC.

  • John Stark

4mvc: Apparently you don't understand the unspoken agreements between most area schools. If a kid leaves Central and goes to another local school, Central routinely grants permission for that kid to play immediately because that's what's in the best interest of the kid. That's how they approach it on Hampshire Street. When the scenario is reversed, which is rare, Central Derangement Syndrome kicks in. Administrators could care less what's in the best interest of the kid if he/she goes to Central. It's shameful and laughable that these overpaid government bureaucrats contend that they care about kids. They clearly do not.

  • NA Fan

4mvc- check your facts. No such thing as a “no recruit” box. The question the MIAA asks is simple: Did the student transfer for athletic reasons. Evan has told any and everyone in NA for the past year that is the exact reason he wanted to transfer- to go to the premier b-ball program in the state right now. Can't blame him because Central is excellent but that's the fact and the rule and he knew it when he transferred. Only person involved is NA AD, not coach or principal, and his job is to answer what he knows to be the truth. Evan played football for Central, right? So the AD didn't block that. This just centers around whther or not he went to Central for basketball, and not at all whether or not Central recruited him. I'm actually one of the minority of folks around here that do not believe that Central recruits: I just think the program speaks for itself and kids want to go there. Tough for local programs, but it's the truth. You can't blame kids for wanting to put on the jersey there, but in this case the MIAA has rules about switching teams for athletic reasons. Not sure how big an impact it would have had on Central this year anyway- He's a nice wing player, but not the point guard they need.

As for NA drinking you must be talking about another sport than basketball. If anything over the years NA coach has gotten into it with a few parents over being too hard on that stuff: putting his own punishments over and above the MIAA suspensions and suspending kids even when they haven't been officially caught but he knows happened anyway. Not much room for “soft on drinking” criticism there.

  • raider4life

John speaks the truth…very shameful for NA the way that went down.
Alas, after a second appeal the MIAA got it right and he will suit up after the 1st of Jan. for the Raiders.
The point guard situation is a little sketchy for CCHS but its early and Ricky will get them to bring the ball up more efficiently by mid season-not to worry. We could use a Wifrado Pagan-esque point guard right about now though.

  • raider4life

John I believe that exact situation was reversed this year with the standout hoops frosh who went to Central albeit for a month or so and then transferred to NA–Central signed off from the get go.

  • NA Fan

Once again- Let's get some facts. The freshman in question, Derek Collins, never played a sport at Central. Therefore, no athletic waiver was needed. The waiver process you keep referring to is designed to prevent kids from moving easily from school to school for athletic reasons. It is only applicable to kids who play for one team one year and another team the next. Does anyone really think he left Central for NA's hoop team? The kid loved Central hoops- Just missed his friends and didn't like the parochial school setting. Even the staunchest CC fans will admit it's not for everyone. As for attending the school, he is a resident of North Andover and wouldn't need anyone to sign off in order to attend NAHS. Just show up at the door and tell them he wants to enroll.

The two situations are totally different. As I wrote before, Central gets a bad rap for “recruiting” because people are jealous of their success. It's not always fair, but that's life and it's the kid's and family's choice. But that stuff has nothing to do with this. None of you have pointed to anything that's even remotely fishy. Should the NA AD lie on the form when it asks if the student transferred for athletic reasons when he made it clear to everyone that's exactly what he was doing? What other evidence do you have to back up your opinion that NA is in the wrong here?

  • CentralFan

Downright criminal to disallow any high school student from participating in sport, unless there are disciplinary reasons. For what, petty jealously. Just a hunch, but my guess is the Principal had no idea, and the AD only knew what he heard from the coach. Misguided loyalty for sure. Does this readership have any have any Class left. Certainely not the blogger that spews this petty crap “Evan has told any and everyone in NA for the past year that is the exact reason he wanted to transfer- to go to the premier b-ball program in the state right now”. Maybe if he had a little encouragement in NA he would have stayed. Anyway, more germain to the spirit of this blog, can he play? Curious to hear about his game.
Hector, please police this thing and set the bar a little higher please. Calling kids out with dispariging remarks. Truly shameful!
A dearth of point guards in the area. This depends on your definition. Absolutely, the way I see it! Speed, Quickness, and Court Vision, makes the players around him better by getting them involved. To a lesser extent the good jumpshot to make the defense honest. Penetration is critical to the cosumate PG. Penetrate and create, finish if it shows. No one fits the description, have yet to see the kid that can break down the defense off the dribble. Have to get to the rack. Many play the position, few fit the bill.
Hopefully the PG emerges for Central. A few new faces on the court. They'll need time to gel. Believe it or not they look to be playing sub par. What is obvious is their athleticism. A collection of speed and quickness that will drive any team asunder. Coulpe that with Carson's domination near the hoop, games become ugly, quickly. If there is a true PG in the area let them breakdown the CCHS backcourt pressure and get easy hoops. The Christmas tourney should be telling. If Lawrence or Andover can't get close, it'll be a long arduous season for all.

I was wondering why Central's schedule looked a bit strange at the start of the season. It seemed a “rite of winter” every year was Central/Andover on a FRIDAY night. And the first match up this year is a Thursday (second match up if they meet in the Christmas Final) after they both play games on the previous Tuesday. After reading your blog (which I can't believe I never found until now, being a highschool sports junkie) I must say I find the reason a bit selfish.
Great, Fazio wants to watch his daughter play. Fine. Step away for the night. I'm sure the other coaches, who most likely were put “on the spot” by a phone call, were not going to be the bad guy, and protest. But really, the Tues/Thurs turnaround is for one person??!! You have two dozen or so players, refs, coaches, and a 1200/1500 fans, but it is changed so Fazio can watch his daughter? Seems out of balance to me. Really.
I can't imagine his mentor would ever have done anythimng like that, and he was family man as well.
    Just my two cents.
Lastly, Jim Zen and Carson are going to destroy this league this year.
Of course, they will pay the price when Andover and Haverhill come calling in 2010/11 and 2011/12.

  • RP

Sorry NA fan but check your facts, you are wrong and don't know the criteria for transfer student eligibility. Recruiting is a factor and does need to be signed off on. Secondly, the NA Principal and AD have to sign off on the eligibility criteria. The NA AD was not able to block Evan from playing football because he never played at the varsity level…otherwise he would have been ineligible. What NA did was shameful and had anything but the students best interest as its motivation. And BTW, Central signed off on 3 transfer students going back to NA this year.

  • RP

Sorry NA fan but you're wrong again. The motivation for transferring Evan was for academic reasons, and that was never argued by anyone at NA including the principal and the AD. It was a purely subjective decision to deny Evan's eligibility and was not based on the MIAA criteria, which is why the MIAC righted the wrong done by NAHS, overturned the decision to deny the waiver, and granted Evan a conditional waiver that allows him to play for CCHS after sitting out the first 6 games.

  • RP

Come on folks, this is high school basketball. Fazio isn't the only parent with a player on both the boys and girls teams. The Zenevitchs also have a player on both teams at Central Catholic, and both players are former State champs. I admire the fact that the powers that be were smart enough to realize that the ability to watch both students is a plus for the parents, but also the siblings and fans.
There are several good teams in the tournament this year, which will make it fun to watch. If it was pre-ordained that Central and Andover were sure to make the finals, then why have the other 6 teams compete….oh right, for the spirit of competition.
This will be a fun tournament to watch. I hope all get to watch as many games as possible for both the boys and girls. And maybe there is a late Christmas gift for someone who isn't expecting it.
    Merry Christmas!
