Ken Maglio has been pushed out as both head football and head varsity baseball coaches for the Golden Warriors.
Maglio was contacted today, receiving a notice from AD Chris Bergeron.
“I’m totally surprised. I have no idea where it’s coming from,” said Maglio, after opening day of his Andover Warriors Baseball School.
Most importantly, he’s not looking to step down.
Maglio, a retired educator with nearly 40 years of coaching in the system, will go to the legal process to protect both jobs.
Tom Meyers, president of the Andover Education Association, noted: “We’re absolutely shocked at this whole action. We intend to litigate, to defend Ken’s position. We feel like we will litigate to get him reinstated.
“The practice in Andover has been to re-appoint individuals as coaches. If there’s a problem, it’s supposed to be raised with the coaches. All of Ken’s evaluations have been positive.”
Maglio, whose baseball team went 12-10 this spring (1-1 in the state tourney), has gone 252-131 in his 17 seasons in the Warrior dugout (.658 winning percentage) with a couple of sectional title.
His Warrior football team went 4-7 this fall. Much more on this as the news breaks.
Shocking, shocking stuff, though, especially with approximately seven weeks to the opening of preseason football camps in August.

Hector - Not a Shocker to Andover Folks. During the Football Season the entire staff quit on him. The AD has come out and said it is for the future of the program. I think he is basing this on Mags decision not to work with the feeder programs. You see the results in that it takes half the season before he has a set lignup. You also see many kids get cut that shouldn't. Time to move on..

Andover doesn't cut anyone. My suggestion before speaking, know the facts. His staff for two season have been, trying to oust him. Injuries, poor play, poor practice habits make for changes in any program week to week. As far as his staff quiting on him. My question still is, "Why go behind his back"? Sit down like men and have an open discussion, but they chose to involve State Rep, some School Committee members and anyone else who is listening to Coach Volunteer.

Andover pulled the same disgusting tactics with Girls' soccer coach Dick Loschi several years back. This is no surprise in a system that seems to have no sense of loyalty to coaches who have served the athletes of Andover well over many years. Whatever happened to just cause and due process.

I have it on good authority that unless the Andover administrators vote to not take their raise that Burgeron will be out of a job and McNally, who has tenure over him, will be taking over as director of athletics, pe, and health (instead, they split the jobs now with Burgeron as AD and McNally as head of PE/H). Think he is just trying to leave his mark on the AHS athletic department?

Come on folks! All of a sudden we are going to question every AD's decision? Hector, the only reason this all becomes classless is because it is dragged to the press by the coaches in question. Teachers are given their pink slips over the summer without notification in most instances, and yet this is news worthy? As I stated in a blog a few weeks ago when the Timberlane ski coaches were not asked back to coach next year, coaches are not let go just because the AD's feel like it. The AD's are trying to show respect by not dragging this to the press, yet in both cases the coaches in question chose the wrong path to get their answers. The coaches in both cases have blinders on and need to realize it is not always about wins or losses, but rather how you get them and at what cost to the programs they represent.
