Thought about this subject an awful lot today at Central-Haverhill, more on that game and some other topics later.
Just want to say there’s an ugly trend brewing around here with some coaches, who simply don’t care or show little regard for the newspaper, the blog and the coverage provided to your athletes.
Shame on all these coaches.
We’ve already had a coach choose to not bother answering calls for a baseball preview.
Check them out on the Eagle-Tribune’s web archive, one coach out of 21 chose to not return a call. His is the one with no coach’s comments.
Then we’ve had AD’s change schedules and not let us know and finally we’ve had coaches who simply blow off calling results.
A Timberlane Regional fan/parent contacted us this morning, asking why there was no mention of the win over Pinkerton Tuesday.
I’d like to thank that caller. He saved me a trip to Derry today for nothing on Wednesday afternoon when the game was originally scheduled.
Perhaps, these coaches don’t think publicity is important to the athletes, their parents, families and friends.
More than 100,000 people still read The Eagle-Tribune every single day.
Thousands more pick up nuggets on line, either on the E-T site, Rallynorth or even here on the Creature.
It matters. It matters to the athletes. It matters to the parents, who’ve dished out their hard cash for equipment, camps, AAU teams, trainers and everything else that goes into making a varsity athlete. Why shouldn’t the kids be recognized?
And yet, some coaches just don’t care enough for the kids.
To answer the man from Timberlane, when coaches don’t call, we usually try to get them. But if we haven’t been told of a schedule change, we have no idea.
Last time I looked these coaches draw salaries, paid by our tax dollars.
They aren’t much, mind you. But they are salaries. Part of the job is to call the newspapers, radio stations or whatever win or lose.
I wanted to cover that game. Who knew?
But when we can’t cover the games, it’s up to the coaches.
We welcome story ideas, beg for them as a matter of fact. Some coaches get it.
Ken Maglio’s Andover Warriors were thumped by Dracut, 15-1.
If you checked Rallynorth, by 6:30 p.m. you knew it.
Kenny calls every time, win or lose.
Methuen’s Dave Fabrizio is batting 1.000 in my eyes. About 50 times in my tenure at the E-T, I’ve asked Fabby for a story idea from his team. He’s given me something decent every time. Why? Because he knows the publicity is a positive for the athlete and for the program.
It bugs me if we get a complaint about my sport. Every spring, Sondra Longo and I have one major blowup because I immerse my self in keeping meticulous baseball stats for over 20 teams to run weekly in The Eagle-Tribune.
When a coach doesn’t bother to call in a box score, 5 Minutes tops, it rankles me.
So, and I speak mostly for baseball folks, if your son belongs in the weekly stat leaders and isn’t there, or you don’t see a big win in the pages of our paper, ask the coach before you attack us.
If we’re in the wrong, then pounce on us and make me/us get better. That’s your right.
OK, that tirade is done.
One other thing, coaches. Please on the bloated boxes with hits that aren’t earned. It’s getting so everything is a hit around here. When the ball goes through an infielder’s legs, or under a glove, it’s an error, not a hit. I’m more than happy showing off the averages around here, but please let the kids earn them.
Had a lot of fun watching Central submariner Matt Novak on the hill today. The funky right-hander has just committed to Northeastern. Congrats, Matt, and congrats on the win.
Raider Brendan Walsh is hitting the hardest .250 I’ve ever seen. He’s hit at least 4 or 5 missiles right at people. Expect those numbers to rise.
I confused Raider Marc Crowley with former slugger Ryan Kemp for two years. Now with Kemp graduated, Crowley is continuing on that kind of torrid pace. He too is tugging the baseball right now.
The news could be promising on Hillie Taylor Robinson and his tender right arm. Robinson, who has driven in five in five games, played third today, meaning he’s OK to throw across the diamond. Could a trip to the mound be in the near future?
Apologies go out to Raider Brian Wolfendale, who I recently referred in print to as Billy. My bad, B. I’ll work harder my man.
Three big ones coming up in the next two days.
Thursday, it’s Central at Andover at 3:30. Got to be Shawn Carlson vs. Brendan Walsh in a battle of a couple real good ones. Can Carlson’s heat slow down the Raiders?
Friday, we’ve got the Hillies headed to Lawrence for a date with Michael Calzetta in a key MVC small battle.
And don’t forget that Londonderry at Salem collision, too. that’s where I’ll be Friday.
By the way, am i the only one who watched NA handle Masco on Tuesday?
