Wow. Fifteen minutes talking to one of the most polished, most genuine, intelligent and gentlemanly 15-year-olds i have come across in nearly 20 years at the newspaper.
With all the rumors circling around Georgetown High sophomore Jaymie Spears, I made a special trip to Wilmington where the Royals were readying to challenge the CAL large choice Wildcats.
Spears lived up to the billing of his coach, Mike Rowinski, who calls Spears the total package on and off the court. Wow, talk about a well-spoken kid. Of course, knowing his grandfather Barry Sr. and his uncle, Barry Jr., I should have expected that.
Most of the interview centered around fact-finding for an upcoming planned column in the Sunday Eagle-Tribune, probably Feb. 8.
But I wouldn’t have been a true reporter if I didn’t ask the tough question, meaning where does his future lie?
Nothing is official, nothing has been signed, as Jaymie said, “I’ll deal with all that and make my final decision after the season,” but the inside is that St. Mark’s School has shown a bundle of interest in the Royals point guard.
For now, Spears is focused on winning a league title and hopefully a Division 4 state title with the Royals.
St. Mark’s, of course, features Erik Murphy, the son of former BC great Jay Murphy, who is headed to the University of Florida.
Remember that date of February 8 for much more on Spears, the two-sport standout, in the Sunday Eagle-Tribune.

BC "great" Jay Murphy ? How do you define "great" ?......Like you've had a "great" 20 years at the Trib ? You've gone from covering high school sports to.....well....anyways.

I think Jay Murphy was 2nd fiddle to the "great" Martin Clark and anytime you're 2nd to a British b-ball player, "adequate" may be a better monicker to hang on him.

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Eight great athletes, whose career spanned 40 years of Boston College athletics, have been selected for the University's Varsity Club Athletic Hall of Fame.
    Hmmm.
    Define great.
This from the BC Web site:

Jay Murphy's four-year career at Boston College marked some of the finest seasons in school history. During his time at the Heights, Murphy led the Eagles to three NCAA Tournament berths and one NIT bid. Twice, BC advanced to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16, while advancing to the tournament's Elite 8 in 1982. He earned BIG EAST honors three times, including All-Conference first team accolades as a senior.

He currently ranks sixth on BC's career scoring list (1,795 points) and seventh on its career rebounding list (763 rebounds). Following his graduation, Murphy continued his playing career in both the NBA and in Europe.

Jaymie is legit, there is no doubt about it-the kid can play.
I am just trying to figure out how our CCHS recruiting machine missed on him. Best of luck to him--wherever he goes he will succeed.

Hec, when you're right, you're right..... Although shame on you for the plug that Murphy led them to an NIT bid...Terrific.....You should have stopped at the 3 NCAA bids.

Jaymie is gone out of Georgetown but they still have the other half, Freshman Johnny is puting up the numbers, Sorry for the jealous parents that the young kids came into town and took it over, What I didnt like was the fact that those kids from school choice were the reason why Georgetown was even winning games not only in Basketball but other sports, Football, Track, X-Country etc. No School choice good luck, now the local kids can play more. To close there is a ton of talent in the system, they just maybe playing the wrong sport.
