Grid Picks
Dave Dyer
This will be a big week for the Methuen football team.
The Rangers are coming off their historic victory over Central Catholic, to improve to 3-2 in the Merrimack Valley Conference (4-4 overall), but the importance of the win will be diminished if it suffers a letdown tomorrow night against Haverhill.
On paper, Mathuen shouldn’t have a problem with the Hillies (1-7), but the truth is that Haverhill is scrappy and has been competitive in most of its games, giving Chelmsford and Central Catholic battles before fading in the second half.
In fact, if Methuen has a letdown and Haverhill gets some turnovers, an upset is possible. So the Rangers should be wary. Still, it should be something like:
PICK: Methuen 34, Haverhill 20
FRIDAY’S GAMES
North Andover is improving, but Wilmington’s QB-running back duo of Steve Stewart and Evan Butters may be too tough to stop.
PICK: Wilmington 27, North Andover 19
Central Catholic needs to be extra fired up if it wants to pull off the upset.
PICK: Billerica 26, Central Catholic 20
Andover, if it can avoid turnovers, should prevail in this intriguing inter-state battle.
PICK: Andover 26, Dover 21
Lawrence is becoming quite difficult to predict.
PICK: Lawrence 27, Triton 14
Pentucket will need to play ball control once again and avoid the big plays that Masconomet is well known for.
PICK: Masconomet 27, Pentucket 19
Every once in awhile, Salem plays formidably and can be a dangerous team. But Central should be able to handle Salem’s running game and move the ball quite easily.
PICK: Manchester Central 27, Salem 10
The Owls need to keep sharp, stay healthy and not take Alvirne for granted.
PICK: Timberlane 28, Alvirne 14
SATURDAY’S GAMES
Why are these teams playing each other for the second time? If nothing else, it should be a good measuring stick.
PICK: Merrimack College 33, Assumption 17
The Royals have too many weapons and too strong of a defense for the sliding Hornets.
PICK: Georgetown 28, North Reading 6
Both teams have gotten better during the season, so this should be a “great” matchup.
PICK: Gr. Lawrence 24, Gr. Lowell 16
The Wildcats can smell the playoffs and they like the aroma.
PICK: Whittier 34, Minuteman 8
Even without Bruce Vieira, Pelham should have no problems in its last game before the playoffs.
PICK: Pelham 29, Epping 8
Phillips Academy has been more consistent, but Phillips Exeter has looked powerful at times. And, as coach Leon Modeste says, nothing is certain in this game.
PICK: Phillips Academy 26, Phillips Exeter 20
With a few breaks, Brooks could very well be 4-3.
PICK: Brooks 21, Rivers 13
Pinkerton should be able to survive this one without Eric Guinto as it gears for the playoffs. But it shouldn’t be a blowout.
PICK: Pinkerton 20, Nashua North 7
107-40
