Note to all high school quarterbacks out there: Listen to Matt Ryan.
The Boston College signal caller has the Eagles off to a 6-0 record and a No. 4 ranking — their highest since Doug Flutie’s Heisman Trophy-winning season in 1984. A few weeks back, he reflected on his days as a schoolboy at William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia.
“I wish I knew what I know now in high school,” he said, laughing.
Without sounding sanctimonious, Matty Ice, as his BC teammates call him, offered a bit of advice to up-and-coming QBs.
“Just enjoy it to be honest with you,” he said. “It’s so much fun, it’s so pure. You’re out there and you’re really having fun playing and things aren’t as complex. Enjoy it as much as you can.”
But, “Make sure that you approach every game like it’s very important. Because they are. High school football’s a big deal. At the end of the day, the X’s and O’s will come. Make sure you’re enjoying it while you’re doing it, because you never know when it’s going to end.”
Ryan is a QB connoisseur. Even though he grew up an Eagles fan, he’s a big admirer of Tom Brady and Brett Favre. Louisville’s Brian Brohm, a fellow NFL prospect, is also one of his favorites.
