Greater Lawrence Tech sent out a fax today announcing their new boys basketball coach.
If you’ve been around the Merrimack Valley over the last 25 years, you’ve heard the name before: Dan Habib.
The announcement is effective immediately, as Habib, is replacing four-year coach Chet Jackson, who is now an Assistant Principal at North Andover High School.
Dan is in his 25th year of teaching carpentry for the “Reggies.” In the press release, Gr. Lawrence Tech AD Ernie Calverley noted the depth of credentials Dan brings to the program and the bonus of having an in house candidate held in such high regard.
Habib has been the Head Coach at Timberlane Regional High School in Plaistow, NH for nineteen years. He also coached freshmen and JV Basketball at Methuen High School along with Varsity Softball. Dan also was an Assistant Varsity Football Coach at Greater Lawrence.
Dan is a member of the first group of inductees into the Greater Lawrence Technical School Athletic Hall of Fame.
The decision to leave Timberlane was difficult for Habib as he considered his time there truly as his home away from home.
When asked what allowed him to make the change Dan said, “This is a tremendous opportunity to give back to my alma mater which has given so much to me over the years. Doesn’t everyone harbor thoughts of coaching where they played?”
Dan further stated, “I am excited about the opportunity. It will be an honor to be just the fourth Head Basketball Coach at the school.” He was a member of the first graduating class to attend all four years
(1965 – 1969)
Dan is a Lawrence native and lives in Methuen with his wife Michelle. They have two sons, Dan Jr. and Gregory.
We will have more on Habib’s new job and expectations in tomorrow’s Eagle-Tribune.
