Hundreds, if not thousands, of local fans are welcoming the return this weekend of high school football.

Local clubs like the Elks, Rotary and the Knights of Columbus are the lifeblood of the communities they serve, donating money, time and experience to those in need. Garden clubs and improvement societies beautify our cities and towns, and groups like Operation Troop Support send letters and care packages to thousands of men and women serving overseas.

A few readers have commented on last Saturday’s story about Salem’s notorious intersection at the junction of Route 1A and Congress and Derby streets.
On the best days, drivers said, the four-way stop is a confused jumble. On bad days, it’s dangerous for automobiles and pedestrians alike.

The collapse of the 1-35 bridge in Minneapolis has state inspectors here in Massachusetts (and, no doubt, across the country) examining local bridges for signs of stress and wear.
Just this afternoon, Gov. Deval Patrick said there were “no red flags” in the inspections of the two dozen Bay State bridges that are similar in design to the collapsed interstate span in Minnesota.
