It is common practice for newspapers to write a “feature” obituary on the news pages — even on Page 1 — when a prominent citizen passes away, or when one of our neighbors dies in tragic circumstances.
In the past year, The Salem News has written stories on people ranging from former Beverly alderman Ed Doherty to Swampscott’s Jennifer Harris, the young Marine helicopter pilot shot down in Iraq.

If you haven’t already, take a look at a new addition to our Web site: The Witches Brew, the student newspaper of Salem High School.
All of the work is done by high school students, and the opinion here is they’ve done a fine job.

On Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 7:30 p.m., The Salem News will sponsor a forum for the candidates in the special election being held for the 8th Essex House seat formerly held by Doug Petersen of Marblehead. The event will take place in the library at Marblehead High School and is open to the public.

Hope you all saw the front-page story in today’s paper about a key member of the 2007-08 New England Patriots, Salem’s Henry Rutkowski.
Rutkowski’s been a busy man this season — he’s a member of the End Zone Militia, the guys in colonial garb who fire off their muskets every time the Patriots score. And as we know, that’s been more than a few times lately.

The tired old saw “If you don’t like the weather in New England, just wait a few minutes” is tired and old for a reason. One need only look to the last few weeks on the North Shore to see it’s true.
