The season of giving
Nov 26th, 2007 by Dave Olson
This is the time of year when we’re bombarded with ads for things we just have to buy for our loved ones (Just how many diamond jewelry ads can they air during a Patriots game, anyway?). Shopping is as much a part of the holiday these days as mistletoe and nativity scenes.
Somehow, though, in the midst of all that hustle and bustle, Salem News readers find a way to reach out to help others less fortunate.
I’m talking about the Salvation Army Christmas Fund, which has been around for longer than anyone here (and at our sister papers in Gloucester and Newburyport) can remember.
Last year, readers donated almost $36,000 to the fund, which the Salvation Army uses to make sure no family is ignored during its time of need.
This year, checks started coming in even before we started running our yearly series of stories about people who have been helped by the Salvation Army and Christmas Fund donors.
If you want to help, send checks payable to The Salvation Army Holiday Fund to 32 Dunham Road, Beverly, MA 01915. Contributions will be recorded and recognized in the newspaper in your name, or as indicated on your enclosed check. If you wish, you may list an additional family member, school, group or corporation, or designate your gift as a memorial (please specify).
If you know of anyone who needs assistance, e-mail holidayfund@ecnnews.com or write to Essex County Newspapers’ Salvation Army Holiday Fund at the address listed above.
And thank you.
