This is the time of year when we’re bombarded with ads for things we just have to buy for our loved ones (Just how many diamond jewelry ads can they air during a Patriots game, anyway?). Shopping is as much a part of the holiday these days as mistletoe and nativity scenes.

A few days ago, my 13-year-old son sat down at my computer when I went to the kitchen for more coffee. I came back to find him surfing salemnews.com.
“Dad,” he said, “if all of this stuff is here, why would anybody read the paper?”
I did the only thing I could do. I grounded him.

Alert readers may have noticed a new feature on the Friday Salem page called ‘Heard around town.’ It’s a collection place of sorts for the little bits of news, speculation and yes, humor that didn’t make it into the paper during the week.
Readers with a bit of a memory will think the column sounds a bit like the popular ‘Reporters’ notebook’ columns of years past.

There are some words in the English language that set people off, no matter the context. We learned that first hand — again — after our story earlier this month on the debate to expand the so-called buffer zones around health clinics where abortions are performed. (The measure has since been approved, and signed into law by Gov. Deval Patrick.)
