Rules of the road

A few readers have commented on last Saturday’s story about Salem’s notorious intersection at the junction of Route 1A and Congress and Derby streets.
On the best days, drivers said, the four-way stop is a confused jumble. On bad days, it’s dangerous for automobiles and pedestrians alike.
We also noted that few Massachusetts drivers seem to know how to proceed at a four-way stop. Some readers, however, faulted us for not putting those rules in our story. It’s a good point. You can find them here in the Massachusetts Driver’s Manual.
It probably wouldn’t hurt any of us to review the manual from time to time.
