Checking on local bridges
Aug 6th, 2007 by Dave Olson
The collapse of the 1-35 bridge in Minneapolis has state inspectors here in Massachusetts (and, no doubt, across the country) examining local bridges for signs of stress and wear.
Just this afternoon, Gov. Deval Patrick said there were “no red flags” in the inspections of the two dozen Bay State bridges that are similar in design to the collapsed interstate span in Minnesota.
But there are thousands of bridges in the state, with about 600 of those in Essex County. We hope to have a story on the state of those bridges in the next day or two, and we could use a little help from our readers, who drive across these structures every day.
What bridges make for a white-knuckle commute? Are there any that you go out of your way to avoid? Is there a railroad bridge you’d rather not drive under? Let us know which worry you.

Now that I know that infrastructure maintenance hasn’t been done for ? no. of years, I’m leery about any road, bridge, or tunnel.
Why is it that it’s all of a sudden, a big surprise that maintenance has to be done? Every budget prepared by politicians or erstwhile civil servants should have had such a line item.
We need to vote the bums (incumbents) out and start all over again. That couldn’t be any worse than what we’re faced with now.
