For the younger readers in the Merrimack Valley and beyond, I recently got this release from Comcast. It might be worth a shot:

Have you ever dreamed of covering a big league game? What about covering the reigning NBA Champions? Comcast SportsNet, in partnership with Comcast, is offering the opportunity of a lifetime to any middle and high school student who enthusiastically answers yes to both questions.

Comcast SportsNet’s award-winning FanCaster program is returning for another season and seeks students who aspire to have a career in sports broadcasting. If selected as a FanCaster, the young media hopefuls will appear on camera during a Celtics home game; go behind the scenes of the Comcast SportsNet Celtics telecast; meet Mike Gorman, Tommy Heinsohn and Greg Dickerson; and be on the legendary parquet floor before the game.

FanCaster is open to students, ages 13-18, who are interested in sports and a career in media. To apply, each student must go online to upload an entry form and a video of him or herself reading the audition script. FanCasters will be selected based on TV presence and the overall quality of the audition video.

Prospective FanCasters and media teachers, can find a FanCaster tool kit, including the entry form, the audition script, upload instructions and the rules of the competition at

http://newengland.comcastsportsnet.com/celtics/fancaster/.

Uploading the entry ensures that Comcast SportsNet will receive it immediately, however, teachers and students can send an entry form and a DVD that is labeled with the student’s name, age, school, home phone number and address to:

FanCaster
Comcast SportsNet
42 Third Avenue
Burlington, MA 01803

Media teachers and students without access to the web can obtain information at (781) 270-7200.

To ensure that all students get a chance to enter, Comcast SportsNet has a rolling deadline for submission. Entries should be sent immediately, but must be received by April 1, 2009.

And use this as a cautionary tale.
