Here’s correspondent Greg Laudani checking in with his CAL baseball report for Thursday, focused on those sizzling North Reading Hornets. Eighth time is a charm. North Reading beats Georgetown 6-2 for its eighth straight victory. Since losing its first two games, Coach Frank Carey and his North Reading Hornets have been the hottest team in [...]

Talked to Haverhill’s Noah Vonleh minutes after he got off the phone with UNC’s Roy Williams. Carolina has joined the list of suitors, making the offer official today. That is unbelievable. Great for Vonleh, who is again tearing it up with his Rivals AAU Basketball Team this spring.

Mark Prior hasn’t pitched in the major leagues since 2006. But Boston signed him to a minor-league deal today. Prior did pitch in 11 games, including making six starts, in the Yankees system last year. One of those games was for New York’s Triple-A team. Red Sox GM Ben Cherington said Prior will be used as [...]

Before tonight’s game, Red Sox GM Ben Cherington sounded pretty excited about seeing Will Middlebrooks‘ big league debut. “I’m just excited to see him out there,” Cherington said. “We drafted him out of high school in Texas, and I had a chance to spend some time with him that spring myself and see him break [...]

Third baseman Kevin Youkilis has been placed on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to April 29) with a low back strain. “It’s long year and we need Youkilis’ bat in the middle of our lineup,” Red Sox GM Ben Cherington said. “And when he’s not feeling good, he’s not the same guy. Hopefully, this downtime [...]

1. Third baseman Kevin Youkilis has been placed on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to April 29) with a low back strain. 2. The Red Sox have recalled third baseman Will Middlebrooks and right-handed pitcher Clayton Mortensen from Triple-A Pawtucket. 3. As reported earlier, first baseman/outfielder Lars Anderson was optioned to Pawtucket following last night’s game. [...]

I’ve asked Will Middlebrooks twice about his free-swining aggressive offensive style when he was in the minors. “You’re not going to make it to the big leagues walking,” he said while playing for Portland last year. In his first major league at-bat just moments ago, he walks on four pitches. Go figure.

The series wraps up with another 7:10 p.m. start tonight. Daniel Bard (2-2, 3.72) opposes Oakland righty Brandon McCarthy (1-3, 3.23). Will Middlebrooks will make his major league debut. He will be wearing No. 64, the same number I wore back in high school football when I set the record for most time on the [...]
