Your words can come back to haunt you. During the Haverhill mayoral race last fall Mayor James Fiorentini was asked whether he was eyeing a bid for state senator should state Sen. Steven Baddour vacate his seat to run for attorney general. At the time, concentrating on his bid for re-election, Fiorentini said no.

“They’re going to have to pry me out of the office,” he said.

Well, “pry” may have been a bit premature. With Attorney General Martha Coakley having a good shot at being our next senator and Baddour announcing he’ll pursue her post if she leaves, Fiorentini — as well as Methuen Mayor William Manzi — has said he is considering running for senate.

The video above (provided by Haverhill Community Television) shows Fiorentini’s stance during the election.

In the world of politics you can never say never.

    Ohmygawd.
    How naive can we get.

Cut the silliness. It is natural politician who allows speculation to build concerning his or her potential fitness for another office, whether they have an interest in running for it or not. Politics is clout, and the day you take yourself out of the mix for anything is the day you lose clout.

Sorry Noah, but a community college understanding of politics does not serve the reader.

It is, however, a very good example of the fact that you can't really put too much weight in politicians' announcements that they will not run for other positions. Indeed, as this case shows, you can never say never.

I don't think it is at all shocking that Fiorentini has now said he is interested, but what is notable is his choice of words during this debate, which didn't really leave him the customary “out” that most politicians leave themselves. And certainly, Fiorentini (at least when I've seen him) is typically a very careful public speaker.
