Despite the fact that their daughter’s former boyfriend is charged with her murder, the family of Caitlin Trask insists their daughter’s death was an accident. WTKR in Virginia is now reporting the accused’s side of the story. Darren Mackie says he was fooling around with his gun and didn’t know it was loaded when it went off, shooting Navy sailor and former girlfriend Caitlin Trask, of North Andover, in the back of the head and killing her.

Straight from the WTKR story:

Mr. Mackie advised that he was playing with his firearm and walked up behind the victim and pointed the weapon at her head and pulled the trigger,” Police Detective J.T. Williams wrote in a criminal complaint on file in Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. “He further stated that he did not know the gun was loaded.”

The reckless criminal act that he “claims” cannot be observed as one of pride for the woman sailor or discipline in the handling of firearms.

why would anyone even play around like that..I dont care if he thought the gun loaded or unloaded….To hold a gun to sumone head mean your SICK IN THE F*CKIN HEAD….And i hope he dose a lot of time for what he did… even tho he dose time is not gonna bring caitlin back to her brother or family…

NOT ONE OF US WERE THERE THEREFORE WE CANNOT SAY WHAT DID AND WHAT DID NOT HAPPEN , WE ARE NEITHER JUDGE NOR JURY .

AND THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO ANYONE OF US .
REGARDLESS TO HOW STUPID IT WAS TO MESS AROUND WITH A LOADED WEAPON

YES I AGREE GUNS ARE NOT TO BE MESSED AROUND WITH , BUT THE LAW ON GUNS NEEDS TO CHANGE , EVERYDAY IN THE USA AT LEAST ONE PERSON DIES FROM GUNSHOT WOUNDS , AND IF GUNS WERE NOT AS FREELY AVAILABLE THIS MAY NOT HAVE HAPPENED .
ESPECIALLY IN AN AGE WHERE PEOPLE ARE LOSING LIFES .

WE HAVE NO RIGHT TO JUDGE ANYONE FOR ANYTHING AS WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS AROUND THE CORNER FOR OURSELFS.

HER PARENTS HAVE CLEARLY STATED THAT THIS WAS AN ACCIDENT , SO THAT SHOULD MAKE PEOPLE SEE CLEARLY THAT THERE WAS NO MOTIF FOR MURDER , IN MY HEART I BELIEVE IT WAS AN ACCIDENT .

BOTH FAMILIES ARE HURTING IN THE OUTCOME OF THIS
AND BOTH FAMILIES WILL NEVER EVER FORGET THE TRAGIC OUTCOME OF A FOOLISH MISTAKE .

THE TRUTH ALWAYS COMES OUT IN THE END ….OR DOES IT ?

REMEMBER ….THE MEDIA CAUSES STIRS TO GET RATINGS UP , BUY THE PRODUCTS AND VIEW THE BLOGS .

    RIP CAITLIN X
AND DARREN MY THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND CAITLINS FAMILY AT THIS TIME. X

P.S. Jloycano Don't go judging people you don't know when you can't even speak proper English. Learn to spell dumbo.
As for this tragedy: keep in mind that both Darren and Caitlin's families are suffering from this, and my prayers are with both.

Debate, argue — by all means have at it — but do try to avoid the name-calling, folks. It just tends to move the conversation away from the real issues (although personally I'm a big fan of Dumbo, big ears and all).

Your opinions are welcome — misspellings and all.

I do think this was very reckless and dumb. I am sure Darren knows that is was stupid and reckless regardless Darren will never be the same this was a terrible, yes preventable accident which makes it all the more worse that Darren, sadly is going to have to live with for the rest of his life. He greatly cared for Catlin. I don't think any one can put any more guilt on him then he has already put on himself. My heart, thoughts, and prayers go out to Catlin and Darren's families.

    1. Always treat a gun as if it were loaded.

    2. Never point a gun at anything you don't intend to shoot.

    3. Keep your finger off the trigger and the weapon on safety until ready to shoot.

What about these three rules does anyone not understand? I do think he is stupid. And he deserves what he gets. He is in the Navy and so am I. I know they teach you that in boot camp and again each time you are in possession of a weapon.

  • Jgodsey

people don't 'get' guns, we are too conditioned to what we see on tv…guns kill people. if you pick it up, expect something to get shot, that's what it's for.

  • PRAYING FOR THE FAMILIES

I am with you on the 3 rules but I too am in the Navy. They do not stress those three rules at all!!! And for the training…..they do not do enough gun safety training for those who have never handled a gun in there life. I know…because I have handled a gun all my life and was taught by my father. The Navy gives about 2 days training…if that…..for those who only carry it for watch reasons. There are alot of accidents every year in the Navy with people not following the three rules. There is just not enough training for those individuals whose rate does not consist of being around firearms. I believe there should be a week long class about safety and safely firing a weapon because so many kids/adults now days are so reckless with firearms. ALOT OF PEOPLE DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE DANGERS OF HAVING A WEAPON!!!

  • Cannot believe it

I agree they don't stress this throughout the navy. Maybe it's asking too much for him to use common sense. It's a stupid mistake he is probably reliving in his mind over and over. Caitlin was in my division so maybe I'm taking this to heart too much. No one should ever play like that. All I can do is my part and make sure that I give my guys training on weapon handling so that hopefully this doesn't happen again.

Everyone knows this was a complete accident. Both families have suffered greatly and they both wish she could come back, but she can’t. It was an accident, this happens to someone everyday and it could happen to anyone. People don’t realize that both families are affected. Her family was/is suffering greatly and probably always will because they lost a daughter and a sister. His family is suffering because they lost both of them and have to live with people asking and looking at them differently because of this happening. Just remember everyone makes mistakes, you along with god need to learn how to forgive people for them and move on with your lives. Just remember that next time you make a mistake even if it’s something simple.
