They’re normally private hearings — no reporters or recording devices allowed — but The Eagle-Tribune is broadcasting former Methuen Police Chief Joseph Solomon’s hearing live today.
The chief — who was fired for misuse of federal grant money as well as other allegations — is petitioning to get his job back. Although Civil Service Commission hearings are held behind closed doors, petitioners have the right to request they be public. Solomon has asked this hearing to be public and we’ve been along for the ride over the past several months. Today, however, The Eagle-Tribune is broadcasting live from the hearing. We hope to be doing more of this sort of coverage going forward — allowing us to give you a front-row seat to the news.
Although such hearings are usually private, it’s not too surprising Solomon has sought to have this hearing aired publically. The city has a new police chief and busines is moving on in Methuen. By allowing the public in, Solomon has clearly kept his case in the public’s eye, reminding us that he’s still seeking to be returned to his former position. Right now, however, the Civil Service Commission’s ears are the only ears he really needs to bend.
