Quieter bells to toll at crossings
Oct 8th, 2008 by Paul Leighton
The plan to install quieter bells at five railroad crossings is now official. The City Council this week unanimously approved the proposal to spend $35,000 on the new bells at Congress Street, Kittredge Crossing, North Beverly and the two crossings near the Montserrat train station.
The idea was first proposed by Colon Street resident and former mayoral candidate Patrick Lucci (above), who said the bells go off 25 times per day for three minutes at a time while the crossing gates are down.
The $35,000 is coming out of a $95,584 payment the city is getting from Verizon because the company underpaid the city over the years for its use of the water tower to place a cell phone antenna. Mayor Bill Scanlon gave credit to Scott Houseman, the former Zoning Board chairman, for pursuing the money from Verizon.

I find it stunningly amazing that Mr. Lucci is the same guy who belittled anymore spending last spring on Beverly Public schools but can head up the idea to make the trains bells near his home quieter.
It’s a good thing we didn’t let him become Mayor in Beverly. It always simply seems to be about what is good for Lame Sir Patrick and not the community.
I here by ban him from entering The Club and drinking our delicious booze.

And I happen to know that the Club is located closer to those bells than Sir Pat’s house. But I guess they do make for a great drinking game.

Norbert,
I was protesting spending money on the schools last spring because the management of the money in the school department is inept. I was in favor of a no vote on a Prop 2.5 override in large measure because it is a permanent tax increase.Additionally, my iniative to install quieter bells benefits many more in Beverly than just me. My efforts were in behalf of scores of my and you neighbors.
Finally, I do not wish to join your dreadful club. I already drink with a better class of lizzards.

I would hasten to add that I am also working with a member of the City Council to have the state pay for the new equipment.
