This is what downtown Cabot Street looked like at 12:45 this afternoon. The city is paving the street from Pond Street to Bow Street. Public Services Director Michael Collins says Cabot should be back open to traffic by the evening commute.

The new Innocenti Park will be unveiled Friday night when Beverly firefighters and police play Salem firefighters in their annual Homecoming softball game at 7 p.m. But the field is not the only improvement. This is a view of the expanded walkway along the Bass River that workers installed as part of the overall cleanup and renovation of Innocenti and the McPherson Youth Center.

Beverly police and the McPherson Youth Center will be teaming up tomorrow (Tuesday) on a drug awareness/safety day down at the youth center. From 4 to 7 p.m. there will be a cookout, pickup basketball and a free throw contest, says Sgt. Joe Shairs. They’ll also be giving out some of the 125 bike helmets made available to the city through the state grant. The event is free.

Did you know we had a world champion in our backyard, or at least in our waters, last weekend? This is a photo of Thomas Hormos, who is the reigning world champion in Snipe class sailing. The Snipe is a 15 1/2-foot racing dinghy, and 20 of the boats were in Beverly last weekend for the New England Championships, hosted by the Jubilee Yacht Club.

What’s up with the former Friendly’s Ice Cream site on Rantoul Street?
Land owner Dinart Serpa, who runs most of the Dunkin’ Donuts in the city, plans to build three office/retail buildings there, but the work has been delayed by a dispute with neighbors. Jack Kelleher of Kelleher Construction, which will do the project, said this morning that dispute has been resolved and work will resume “reasonably quickly.”

If you’ve been to Lynch Park lately, you might have noticed the planter that used to be a fountain that used to be a planter.
Sounds confusing, but it worked out fine. The city has converted the former fountain into a planter this year and added granite curbing to protect it from vehicles. Parks and Recreation Director Bruce Doig said the fountain would often get clogged from sand and hair because … continued »

Beverly Police have issued this announcement about the street paving that starts tomorrow:
The Department of Public Services will begin road paving on the following streets on Wednesday, July 23, 2008. Streets included are:
Cabot Street between Pond and Abbott Streets
Pond Street
Bow Street
Chapman Street
Chapman Terrace
This work will take approximately one week. All work will occur between 7AM and 5PM. Vehicles on the listed streets must be moved by 6:30AM. Any vehicle obstructing the work … continued »
