There was a lot going on at last night’s City Council meeting, and not many people there to watch it. By the time the finance committee made its vote on the school budget, at about 10:30 p.m., there were literally no members of the public in the audience at City Hall. Just councilors, city officials, two reporters and a cable TV person.

Here’s a question a few people have asked today: Would another school really close if the City Council doesn’t approve the extra $680,000 for the schools at tonight’s final budget meeting (7 p.m. at City Hall)?
Probably not, according to Superintendent James Hayes. Hayes told city councilors last week that it was probably too late to close another school and suggested severe programs cuts would be made instead, such as eliminating all funding for sports. … continued »
