Anne’s Consignments moves one door down

Anne’s Fine Consignments created one vacancy but filled another when it moved one door down on Cabot Street over the weekend. Anne’s moved from 194 Cabot St. in the Odd Fellows building to 196 Cabot St., site of the recently closed Celtic Gallery.
Anne’s owner Judy Michaud said her old space was too big and wasn’t handicap accessible. With her two Yorkies running merrily around the store this afternoon, Michaud said her new space is just the right size and gets plently of sunlight through the windows.
Michaud bought Anne’s from original owner Anne VanArsdale in 2006. VanArsdale, who is now 94, ran the shop for 20 years. Michaud said business has been good, despite the slow economy. She said consignment shops are becoming big among young people, who are concerned about the environment and like the idea of using “recycled” clothing. Michaud also said gas prices are forcing people to stay closer to home rather than driving to the malls.
Michaud had plenty of help with her move on Saturday, including the assistance of a female prisoner on parole from Framingham State Prison. The prisoner is staying at Sally’s Place, a sober house for women where former Beverly resident Nancy Shea is the house manager. Michaud has often donated clothes to Sally’s Place, so Shea and one of her current residents returned the favor by helping with the move.
Shea was in Anne’s recently with a former Framingham State prisoner who just graduated from Boston University and is going to law school.
“Judy gave her her graduation clothing,” Shea said. “She has given me bags and bags of clothes.”
