File it under bad timing: On the hottest day of the year so far, the YMCA outdoor pool is out of commission due to a malfunctioning filter. But relief is in sight. YMCA Executive Director Meegan O’Neil said she’s hoping the pool will be open later this afternoon. If not, it will definitely be open tomorrow, she said.

A reminder that the city will collect leaf bags and other yard waste this week on your regular trash pickup day. Yard waste can also be taken to the Standley Street compost site on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The Beverly Fire Department honored fallen firefighters during their annual Firemen’s Sunday Memorial at Central Cemetery yesterday. Five Beverly firefighters have died in the line of duty since 1956, according to the fire department:
– Roger P. Boardman, May 15, 1956
– William L. Reilly, May 13, 1967
– George E. Munroe, March 9, 1962
– Robert B. Kelly, June 19, 1975
– Robert J. McPherson, March 26, 1983
