The overriding question
May 6th, 2008 by Paul Leighton
Everyone knows the big question facing the city. Now here it is, officially, in black and white. This is what you’ll see on the ballot when you go to the polls on Tuesday, June 3, to consider a Proposition 2 1/2 override for the schools:
“Shall the City of Beverly be allowed to assess an additional $2,500,000.00 in real estate and personal property taxes for the purposes of funding the operating budget of the Beverly Public Schools for which the monies from this assessment will be used for the fiscal year beginning July first, two thousand and eight.”
If all those zeroes confuse use, the amont of money in question is $2.5 million.
Just like any other election, the polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

No way, not if this override is just earmarked for schools. There are plenty of other departments in the city that are in dire need of help.

I have been fighting for the schools for too long. The override is just another band aid. If people want to fix the problem they have to unite as communities against the state mandates and demand promised funding that was supposed to happen with the mandates. Otherwise the mandates must go. Teachers need to accept state insurance plans and realize everyone is cutting back. Hey, the superintendent needs to share space with the mayor and share secretaries just as they ask every year the kids of Beverly to do…cram in and share. Saying all that..I still don’t know how I will vote.
